The Crime:
Theft of the most complete surviving copy of the Yongle Encyclopedia.
Originally completed during the Ming Dynasty in 1408, it was one of the
earliest general encyclopedias and remained the world’s largest for six hundred
years. Most copies were burned or
looted, making this rare surviving edition extremely valuable.
