Part 16:

Uh-Huh

After they were finished Mark rolled off her with a groan.

“You are fucking amazing.”

“Uh huh.” Lily answered cringing at the site of Mark Caudiff lying on the bed next to her panting for air when what she had envisioned in her head was Kevin gazing up at her with eyes full of love.

“I mean truly amazing. I have never-“

“Get out.” Cutting him off Lily rolled over dragging the sheet with her.

“What?” Wiping the perspiration from his upper lip Mark smiled.

“I said get out.” Tipping her head innocently Lily wrapped the sheet around her naked body, securing it under her arm. “What part of that didn’t you understand?”

“I did you a favor Leslie.” Marks eyes narrowed in the dwindling candlelight his right hand tracing circles across his bare chest as he spoke.

Bending down Lily crawled across the bed; the bedsheet still wrapped tightly around her as she paused above him, the long blonde tendrils of her hair trailing across his face and chest.

“You did me a favor, and I did you a favor Mark.” she replied gesturing to the bed where they had just made love. “And now I want you to get the hell out.”

Dropping the phone to the bed Kevin stumbled backwards his body shaking visibly in the low light of the hotel room.

“Kevin you can take it back.” Nick spoke softly afraid of Kevin turning his wrath on him again. “If you change your mind you can take it all back.”

“Why would I want to take it back Nick?” Kevin spoke softly through clenched teeth. “She isn’t the woman I thought she was.” Shaking his head he walked in Nick’s direction, careful not to make direct eye contact for fear of the pity he would see in his young friends eyes.

“I wanted somebody to fill the void left by Kayden’s death and Lily’s desertion and Kristin wasn’t it.”

“Kevin you can’t give up on your wife and son because of something that happened years ago.“ Stopping Kevin turned a slight smile on his face.

“Oh I’m not giving up on my son Nick.”

“What?”

“Where Nate goes I go. Kristin can rot in hell before I’ll ever let her see him again.”

Walking casually through the lobby of the hotel Brian and Howie smiled at the girls working behind the front desk.

“Um are you looking for Mr. Bone Digger and Mr. Fun Dip?” One of the girls said with a laugh, catching Brian’s eye.

“C’mon B let’s just go upstairs.” Howie tugged at Brian’s sleeve.

“Have they come by here?” Ignoring Howie Brian made a b-line for the girl who had spoken to them.

“Yes both of them went upstairs earlier.”

“Together?”

“No.” She batted her eyelashes at Brian. “Mr. Bone Digger came by first to get his messages and then Mr. Fun Dip came by a little while later.”

“Thanks.” Smiling Brian nudged Howie before turning his attention back on the girl.

“So do you have a date for later?”

“No?” She replied innocently. “But it’s like 2:00 a.m.?”

“Well when does your shift end?”

“At 6:00 a.m.” Scrunching up her nose she shrugged. “Then I usually go home and go to bed.”

“Well what do you say you stick around after your shift and I’ll take you out for breakfast?”

“I say okay.” She nodded blushing slightly as Brian tapped the counter top twice with his fist before giving Howie the signal that he was ready to go.

“You’re a suave one.” Howie laughed as the two walked to the elevators.

“Yeah well what can I say, I learned all my best moves from watching Kev.”

“Speaking of Kev.” As the elevators open Kevin stepped out walking past Brian and Howie in a daze.

“Kev?” Howie called out as Kevin continued towards the front desk.

“It’s like he didn’t even see us?” Brian snorted elbowing Howie in the side.

“Hey Kev.” The two men followed in Kevin’s footsteps coming up on either side of him as he asked the girl behind the desk for a pen and piece of paper.

“Earth to Kevin.” Running his hand up and down in front of Kevin’s face Brian laughed. Turning to face his younger cousin Kevin’s eyes were flat and sunken, his jaw tight, and skin pale.

“Oooooh, okay that’s not a good face. What’s going on.” Placing a hand on Kevin’s shoulder Brian was surprised to feel him trembling.

“I’m leaving.”

“Kevin?” Laughing nervously Brian looked over at Howie, his wide dark eyes filled with confusion as he shook his head to let Brian know he didn’t have a clue what was going on.

Turning back around Kevin grabbed the pen that the desk clerk had provided him with.

“Kevin you can’t leave, we have the interview tomorrow on the Today show. Plus we have another show tomorrow night-“

“Fuck Katie Couric.” Kevin spat cutting Howie off as he quickly scribbled something down on the piece of paper before him. “My life does not revolve around this band and its’ schedule.”

Folding up the piece of paper Kevin turned back around attempting to make his way by Brian.

“HEY.” Shouting Brian shoved a hand into Kevin’s chest catching him off guard as he stumbled slightly. “What makes you think you can talk to us like that?”

Looking to the side Kevin smiled.

“You’re right Brian, you’re right. Let me rephrase that.” Cocking back a fist Kevin delivered an uppercut to Brian’s jaw that knocked him flat on his ass as the girls behind the desk let out screams like spectators at a prizefight.

Balling up the piece of paper in his fist Kevin threw it down watching it bounce off of Brian’s chest. “If you need me I’ll be staying there until tomorrow afternoon.” Turning he signaled for the concierge to get him a cab on his way through the revolving hotel doors.
