'Go
to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep!' chanted Mariah in her head. She had been
tossing and turning, not being able to sleep. She looked at the clock and it
read 2 AM.
'AHHH!!!'
screamed Mariah in her head. She then sat up and walked over to the window. Her
doctor had given her exactly what he promised. The view was pretty. In the
distance, she could see the beach. It was her favorite place to be. She loved
the beach, the calm peacefulness of it, the way the waves gently rolled onto
the shore. Everytime she wanted to think or just be by herself, she'd go to the
beach. Especially during the sunset. That was what she loved to do. She went a
lot during the time her father had died.
Mariah
just sat by the window and stared, wishing she could be out there. Knowing she
couldn't be out there, she got up and walked away from the window. She knew the
longer she stared, the more she wanted to be there.
She
stood in the middle of her room, contemplating what to do. She had an idea. She
tiptoed to the door and looked out. No nurses were in sight. Mariah tiptoed
down the hall. She didn't really know what she was looking for, just felt like
exploring a little. Mariah's floor was split into two sections. She was in the
long-term patients side and across from her was the intensive care unit. Most
of the people in there were moved to her side after a while.
Mariah
walked over to the intensive care unit and looked around a bit. The walls had
paintings on them, probably trying to create a better atmosphere. She then
remembered Brian, not that she was able to forget about him for very long. She
asked the nurse where he might be.
"I
think you should be in bed, young lady," said the nurse.
"I
know," said Mariah. "I just can't sleep. Could you just tell me which
room he's in?"
The
nurse eyed Mariah for a minute, then said, "Third door to your left."
"Thank
you!"
The
nurse just smiled and went on with her work.
Mariah
walked down to Brian's room. His door was slightly opened and she peeked in.
There, lay Brian, with tubes hooked to him and the machine. She felt so bad for
him. She walked in and sat in the chair next to him and just stared. Memories
flooded into her head. Her father.
'Oh Dad I miss you,' she thought, her eyes watering.
After a couple of minutes, she got up and left, thinking
that maybe she should talk to him the next day. She walked back to her room and
laid on her bed thinking about it. She then slowly drifted asleep.
