Chapter 8

Melissa's View

"Sweetie are you all right?" Denise asked worried.

"What? Ye...yeah I'm fine," I mumbled slumping down in my chair. Actually I wasn't. I thought I saw my father outside and it scared me so bad. He's not exactly the nicest guy in the world. He, in my opinion, is probably one of the meanest people I have ever known.

"OK, but if something is bothering you, just tell me," she said patting my leg lightly.

"I will," I slightly smiled at her.

At the Arena Before the Concert

"BOO!" someone said behind me and then grabbed my sides.

"AHHHH!" I screamed and then jumped.

"Jeez, Mel, you are one jumpy girl," Nick laughed putting his arm around my shoulder.

"Sooooo funny Carter, I get scared easily what can I say?" I said slapping his arm.

"Sorry about that but I couldn't help it. I saw ya over here all by your lonesome and I thought I'd keep you company."

"After giving me a heart attack?"

He just laughed and ruffled my hair, "You're a pretty cool girl you know that?"

"I'm glad I live up to your expectations."

"You're funny too," he laughed.

"Well, you're funny looking," I smiled cheekily up at him.

"Oh thanks a bunch!" he said grabbing his heart and acting hurt. I rolled my eyes and said, "You're so dramatic."

"Yeah but hey you gotta love me," he smiled down at me. I smiled up at him and thought about what a great smile he had. He was pretty cute on TV but in
real life he's even better.

"Nick, take stage in 5," a backstage hand said. Nick nodded and then squeezed my shoulder.

"I hope you're ready for a big surprise," he smiled.

"Surprise? There's a surprise? What is it!?" I asked.

"Hee hee hee," he smiled mischievously and then took off.

"Nick! Come on! Tell me!" I yelled after him. Oh great, now I have to live in fear for my life. OK, maybe not that extreme but you never know with these guys.

Nick's View

An Hour Into the Concert

"Hello Orlando! We have something very special to do at this moment so just sit tight," Brian said to the crowd after we sang 'Don't Want You Back.' Melissa is gonna love this...well at least I think she will. It was my idea. I thought she might like it. It's kinda a big way of saying "WELCOME TO THE TOUR!"

"This is a special surprise to a new member to the Backstreet Family. As maybe most of you know The Make A Wish Foundation granted this one very wonderful girl a wish to go on tour with us. We were glad to have her come with us. We could always use a new person on tour. Her name is Melissa. We'd like to have her come out here and give her a big welcome to the tour, so what do you say? Can you give a loud noisy greeting to her?" I asked into the microphone. I smiled when I heard all the screams in agreement.

"All right! Then lets get her out here!" AJ said and then ran off the stage. Melissa was pulled up onto the stage by AJ and she looked shocked beyond belief. Her eyes were wide with surprise and her mouth was hanging wide open. I laughed lightly and walked over to her. I put my arm around her shoulder and said, "This is my buddy Mel! Say hi Melissa."

I put the microphone in front of her face and she just looked up at me mortified. I laughed and butt bumped her to try and get her to talk.

"She must be a little shocked, she didn't know this was going to happen," Brian laughed.

"Come on, just say hi," I said.

"H...hi," Melissa said into the mic. The audience responded with a great big 'Hi!' She smiled and then started to relax.

"We have done this to welcome you to the tour," Howie explained. "We hope you have an awesome time and we're gonna make it all worth while for you."

"Yup Yup Yup, to begin with we're gonna have you sing a song and dance around," I grinned. Her eyes got wide and she looked at me bewildered. I started to laugh hysterically.

"I'm only kidding!" I laughed. She just slapped my arm.

"She's violent folks! Beware!" I said to the crowd. Melissa glared at me and then Brian came over and took her hand. I hope I didn't make her mad, that wasn't my intention but for the rest of the time she got to be onstage she didn't even look at me. I guess I embarrassed her more than I knew. I really didn't mean to. I'll just make it up to her somehow.
