The Little Things
By Melissa
I got out of my car and walked with my
wife, Kristin, towards the McDonald's entrance. I saw a women sitting on the
side of the building by the trashcan. My heart went out to her, She looked so
cold and so hungry I wished there was something I could do for her. I
watched as she pulled her torn blanket over her face to protect herself against
the bitter cold. We walked into McDonald's and ordered our food. We sat down
and I looked at the food I had an appetite for before but now didn't. I
couldn't eat it when I knew other people were our there starving for just one
single bite of food. Kristin looked at me and knew something was wrong.
"Kev what's wrong you haven't
touched your food" She said as I looked up at her.
"I cant eat it" I said.
"If it bother's you that much
Kev, why don't you give it to the woman outside?" Kristin asked as I
looked up at her. That was a great idea.
"I'll be right back" I said
as I walked up to the counter and ordered a coffee as I held my burger in my
hand. I grabbed my coat as I headed out the door. I walked through the snow and
to the woman. She looked up at me with fright in her eyes. I crouched down to
her level as I gave her a smile of hope.
"This is for you" I said as
I held out the coffee and the burger.
"Thank You sir" She said as
she took them from my hands. I saw her hands and face were a bright red as I
took off my gloves and scarf.
"Don't thank me you need this
stuff more then I do" I said as I put the scarf around her neck and handed
her the gloves.
"Thank you god" She
whispered as a small smile spread across her lips. I stood up straight as I put
my hands in my pocket and walked back in. I walked back to the booth we
were sharing and sat down placing my coat next to me in the seat.
"Do you feel better now?"
Kristin asked as she looked at me.
"yeah" I said as
we got up and walked out the exit doors. I looked back at the woman and she
smiled at me. I smiled back as we both got into the car and drove off down the
street.
