Chapter 8

As I walked into the room I saw Nick’s eyes searching around the room.  I walked over and sat by his bed.

“Hey Nick,” I said as his eyes looked to me. He tried to talk, but couldn’t because the respirator was still in his throat.

“Don’t talk,” I said, as Nick looked at the pad of paper, and I handed it to him. He wrote down what he wanted and handed it back to me. I read it and looked up at me.

“What do you mean by ‘what am I doing here?’  I’m here because I’m your friend,” I said as Nick looked at me.

He took the pad away from me.  He wrote something else down and handed it back to me.  I read it and looked back at Nick as tears filled my eyes.

“I know I wasn’t there, Nick.  Do you want me to get the doctor to take the respirator out so we could talk normally?” I asked, as he nodded, and I walked out of the room.

I got Dr. Martinez and brought him into the room.

“Hello Mr. Carter.  I’m Dr. Martinez,” he said as he was about to pull out the tube.  “On three, I want you to breathe out.”

Nick nodded in agreement.

“One… two… three,” Dr. Martinez said as he pulled the tube out of Nick’s throat, and he tried to catch his breath.  Dr. Martinez walked out of the room as I looked back at Nick.

“How could you do it?” I asked as Nick looked at me.

“Do what?” he asked, his voice small.  He didn’t look me in the eyes because he knew what I was talking about.

“Try to kill yourself!” I said my voice rising.

“You don’t know how it is, Brian! Watching the people who abandon you do what you loved more than anything!” Nick yelled.

I looked at his eyes, which were a dark blue.  “No, I don’t know, but you could of called me instead of taking cocaine and getting drunk everyday!” I yelled as I saw AJ open his eyes.

“I had no choice, Brian.  I shouldn’t of been the one to call you when it should have been your job.  You’re my friend.  Isn’t that what friends are for?” he said as tears came to my eyes.

I saw AJ look at me, and I looked at Nick, then walked out of the room.

I walked back to Kevin’s room and start to cry.  Everything he said was true, and it hurt so much.  Was I really the one who did this to him and our friendship?
