Chapter 3
Nick rolled over only to find the bed
empty. He opened his eyes and small smile crept to his face. He wasn’t in the
bed or the home that he shared with her; he was at his parents, in the room
that used to belong to him but was now one of the many spare rooms. He rubbed
the sleep from his eyes and he slowly sat up, glancing at the clock that read
8:30. Too early to go downstairs, he didn’t need his mother fussing around him
that would just make him nervous. Laying back down he glanced at his phone on
the night stand, he went to reach for it but realised that had both decided
that they were going to have no contact for forty eight hours before the
wedding. Instead he grabbed for the album by the side of the bed and started to
flip through it, the first photo, he remembered, was of them on their first
date.
--------------------------------------------------------
“Okay you have to pick one,” He said,
as they walked into the hat shop at the beginning of Main Street. All around
were hats and wigs of every design imaginable.
“I don’t need a hat, Nick,” She said,
looking perplexed.
“Yes you do, you said at the bar that
you can never be in the heat without a hat and you don’t have one today,” He
replied, remembering when they had met
for a third time on the same day. It was then he had decided to just go for it
and ask her out on a date, to his surprise she had said yes and now they were
in Magic Kingdom.
“Okay alright.” She picked up the
dullest baseball cap she could find and plonked it on her head as she smiled in
his direction.
“Ohh, no, no, no. You can’t come to
Disney and wear some dumb old baseball cap,” Nick said, as he picked up a
jesters hat and placed that on her head. “There much better,” he said looking
pleased with himself. Edie stared at him for a minute before glancing over his
shoulder to get a look in the mirror and even she had to crack a smile at her
reflection.
“Well then you have to wear this one,”
she said, as she plonked the Pirates hat on top of his head. “And no pirate is
complete without this patch.” She threw him one and he put it on and started doing his best
pirate impression.
After half an hour of trying on
various hats and wigs they left the shop, Edie with a pink princess hat that
trailed a pink lacy material after her, and Nick decided to stick with the
pirate hat, patch and he also picked up a sword along the way.
The day was drawing to a close and
they decided to watch the night parade along with the closing fireworks. They
both stood in front of the Castle and watched as Mickey and the rest of the
gang pranced around in front of them along to the music that was so familiar to
the films they had both watched as children. As the parade finished they turned
to watch the fireworks, Nick behind Edie with his arms around her shoulders her
hand holding onto his wrist. Halfway through the show, Edie tuned and raised
her head up to Nick’s, her lips met his and felt himself respond to her gliding
his tongue over her lips he felt her mouth open slightly and took this as a
signal to intensify the kiss. After a few moments she pulled back.
“Thanks for a great time Nick. This
has been the best date ever.” She said as she dug around in her purse for
something. She pulled out a camera and asked the person next to her to take a
picture.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick smiled as he remembered that
first date and that first kiss. He looked again at the picture. They were both
stood in front of the castle with their hats on, Nick’s arms draped around
Edie’s shoulders and her hands holding on to his arms huge smiles covering
their faces. Just as the photo had been captured a firework had exploded and so
the sky was lit up with an array of pinks and purples.
