Chapter 16

Kevin’s point of view

As I continued to fight, I noticed others appearing. Guards and slaves were being rallied by the sounds of the fighting. I smiled, glad that something was being done about this slavery. I tore left and right, letting my rage control me. All I wanted to do was find Knartop…… and kill him.

A Small Gecko guard charged at me, sword raised, ready to slash downwards. As his pace quickened and he got closer, he swung the glinting blade in a downward arc. With no other choice, I grabbed the blade with my bare hands. I felt the metal edge bite into the flesh, and warm crimson liquid seep from my hands, yet I paid no heed to it. I saw my chance. I snapped the blade. The cracking noise echoed off the chamber walls. The Small Gecko let go of the sword and I used both halves myself. I knocked the guard out cold with a punch from the sword hilt, and turned sharply looking for Knartop.

Amid the battling guards and slaves, I saw no sign of him, and I regarded his cowardice with contempt.

The adrenaline in my veins had a vitalising effect on me, and I felt stronger, more powerful…… and I sensed for the first time that I was different; It was as if I could now recognise the change in me, the heightened rebellious instinct, the greater sense of rage and temper, the feeling of existing as the same being but some other more vicious being at the same time, symbiotically bound.

I was drunk on the revelations unfolding, as I stood tall among the combatants. This was the final stage of change in me - the sudden realisation of my new, true nature had completed the final part of my transformation to a Soul Creature. I was now truly a new and different being. For the first time since my arrival, despite the knowledge of my actual death, I felt alive.

I threw back my head and roared like a crazed beast.

“Kevin, help!”

Flyer! I used my keen eyes to look for him. At first I couldn’t see him at all, then I spotted him. He was flying above the Geckos, dog-fighting unsuccessfully with two larger Valedrons, armed with whips. I felt more rage bubbling up as he was caught in the back by a whip. Using the sword tip half of the blade in my bleeding palms, I hurled it upward with the force of pure anger. I must have been lucky since I wasn’t aiming and the blade edge cut right through the Valedron’s right wing membrane, causing him to falter and clumsily crash downwards. The remaining guard took one look at the broken sword hilt in my other hand, and flew away from me.

Flyer valiantly tried to follow and attack as the guard retreated, but the Valedron guard was not afraid of Flyer. He turned on him and snapped his jaws before Flyer could stop, biting into Flyer’s forearm. I heard Flyer’s shrill cry. Taking a run up, I leaped and plucked Flyer out of harm. I tucked him safely under my arm and landed with a thud. He looked at me relieved.

“Don’t pick a fight you can’t win, Flyer!” I advised.

He nodded fearfully, shaken by the sudden event. His eyes turned to look ahead of us and widened in terror.

“Kevin, watch out!” he cried.

I sharply looked up myself.

I was greeted coldly by a spear-point in my upper chest.
