Two
Hearts
By Mare
AN: This is a short story based on the lyrics
to “Heart Without A Home” off of Nick Carter's Now or Never album. A
Bauhaus contest entry.
I stand by myself...
Alone from the crowd of people who have just bathed me in a warm glow of their
love. I get freaked out sometimes by the adulation the females have for me. It
feels wrong. Do I deserve their longing? No
I shake the thought out of my head, Silly boy, this is your life. You chose to
do this, live this, be this.
I move back into the crowd and my eyes gaze upon all of the people who have
brought me to this moment. There are such a huge variety of people here. Some
old, much older than me. Some too young to hold the signs they carry professing
a love that they can't even understand yet.
I wave and smile as I pass them all. Winking to the ones that I feel need some
extra attention. They will remember that moment for the rest of their lives, I
have already forgotten it.
I stop and sign autographs and that's when I see her.
Standing all alone, amongst a crowd of people screeching my name. She sticks
out because everyone else is smiling. She is not. Everyone else is screaming,
she is quiet, everyone else is jumping up and down, she stands still. Her head
bowed down, looking uncomfortable and out of place. I am drawn to the place
where she is standing. The yells and cheers diminish into a dull roar and all I
see is her and I.
I walk up to her and say hello. She looks at me and then turns around thinking
I must be talking to someone else. She slowly turns her head back my way when
she sees that she is the person I have greeted.
"Hello.." She says hesitantly and looks back down at the floor. I
delicately lift her chin up and have her eyes meet mine.
"My name is Nick"
"Yes, I know that. I'm Michelle" She seems confused. I don't mean to
make her uncomfortable.
"Would you like to go for a walk with me?" I ask her as I hold out my
hand to grab hers. She smiles. What a beautiful smile I think as we walk
together. We don't speak for a few minutes before she asks me with a slight
crack in her voice,
"Why me? You could have picked any of the girls that were all over you.
Look at me Nick" When she says that I do. I gaze into her perfect green
eyes and don't understand what she is talking about. She makes eye contact with
me and then breaks it to look back down at the floor.
"I am huge Nick, I'm over 300 pounds. People were laughing at you, their
laughing at you now." She says through tears. That's when I hear the
whispers...
"What is he doing with THAT fatass!"
"He's so funny, I wonder what show he is doing this for!"
"He can't honestly be attracted to HER can he?" I look around and see
the kids pointing and laughing under their breath. It makes me sick. I grab
Michelle in a hug and whisper..
"Come on let's dance" We sway to the music the laughing, taunting
crowd is making until they are quiet. With eyes closed, pressed against one
another we become inseparable. I realize that we, Michelle and I are the same.
Two hearts without a home. We seem right together. Two lonely souls looking for
the perfect someone. She pulls away from me. I grab her hands and she smiles.
"Why me?" She asks once again.
"Because when I saw you just standing there head down, looking so sad and
lonely, I saw me. I feel the same way." I pause and than to prove my point
we say in unison..
"Stranded!" She laughs. What a gorgeous laugh! She reaches up on her tippy toes and gives me a friendly peck on the cheek. I hug
her tightly and then the moment is over.
The crowd envelopes me once again, and she is lost. I will remember that moment
for the rest of my life. I hope she does too.
My heart found a home for those few moments and the feeling was unbelievable!
Heart Without A Home
You're a Heart without a Home
A Rebel without a cause
If you feel as though you're always
stranded on the shore
Like a thief in the night
let me steal your heart away
Maybe if for reasons what you're looking for
I'll be yours
