What Hurts the Most

By Kaylee

Kayleigh sat there staring out the window thinking about that fateful day.  As the rain fell down the window, tears fell down her face. She continued to stare out the window when a song came on the radio. It was Rascal Flatts "What Hurts The Most". Every time she heard this song memories came flooding back to her about the day. She cried even harder as the words went straight to her heart. She will never forget that day for it is burned into her memory forever!

I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house

That don’t bother me

I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out

I’m not afraid to cry every once in a while

Even though going on with you gone still upsets me

There are days every now and again I pretend I’m ok

But that’s not what gets me

The day when she lost the only one she ever loved. Brian Littrell. He was the greatest boyfriend she could have ever wanted. He was famous and not to mention handsome.  He was part of a boy band the Backstreet Boys. They were known world wide. Every girl wanted him and she was the lucky one that got him. They went out for 2 years.

No one knew about Kayleigh's past, she vowed never to speak of it again. Well no one knew except Brian. Who she said saved her from her past. Which he did. She had an abusive father and an uncaring mother. She had no where to go. Then she ran into him and it was love from first sight and he let her move in with him away from her parents who really didn’t care.

What hurts the most

Was being so close

And having so much to say

And watching you walk away

And never knowing

What could have been

And not seeing that loving you

Is what I was tryin’ to do

Kayleigh drifted off into space and the memory of the day came into her head. The song played in the background as the memory played in her mind.

~*~Flashback - March 2nd, 2005~*~

It was Friday night.  Brian and Kayleigh's 2 year anniversary. He called her from rehearsals and told her to get dressed up and that he was coming to pick her up. She hung up the phone with him and rushed to the shower to get ready. He was coming to pick her up at 7:30 it was 6:00 now, so she had an hour or so to get ready. Kayleigh hopped out of the shower and got dressed listening to 'As Long As You Love Me'.

She slipped on a little black dress that stopped just above her knees. She took out the locket Brian gave her for her birthday and put that on. She fixed up her hair and put on some make-up. By the time Kayleigh was done it was 7:30. There was a knock at the door and she rushed to answer it expecting to see her Brian. Instead of Brian standing at the door two police officers were there.

"Excuse me miss, but do you know a Mr. Brian Littrell?" the first officer asked.

Kayleigh couldn’t speak but she managed a nod. She looked at both officers and finally found her voice.

"Where’s Brian? Is he alright? What happened?" She asked them with a worried look on her face.

The officers looked at her and asked if they could come in. She let the officers in and they stood in her kitchen.

"Ma'am I think you might want to sit down" the second officer said.

She sat down and asked the officers "what’s going on? please tell me.”

The officers sighed.  They didn’t want to tell the girl especially when she looked like she was ready to go out (which she was).

"Well Mr. Littrell got into a very bad car accident on 480."

"Oh my God!" She whispered.  Kayleigh couldn’t believe what she just heard. She didn’t want to believe it.

She couldn’t think.

Only one question ran through her head 'Is he ok?'.

As though the second officer read her mind he answered her question. "I’m so sorry miss, but he didn’t make it."

Kayleigh couldn’t think, couldn’t breath. She was screaming on the inside, but was mute on the outside. It felt as if a 10,000 daggers pierced her heart.

"We found this in the car on the passenger seat." the first officer said handing her a small velvet box and a letter.

She gasped as she took it. She knew Brian was going to propose to her tonight. She had a feeling anyway and she was right. She started to cry harder than she was. The officers said their good-byes and showed themselves out. Kayleigh took out the ring and it was the most gorgeous ring she ever saw. It had a huge diamond in the middle and small blue ones around it. She put on the ring and vowed to never, NEVER take it off.

~*~End of Flashback~*~

It’s hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go

But I’m doin’ It

It’s hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I’m alone

Still Harder

Getting up, getting dressed, livin’ with this regret

But I know if I could do it over

I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart

That I left unspoken

To this day she still cant get over Brian leaving her. She sat there looking through old pictures of her and him and the rest of the guys. Everyone seemed so happy back then. No one knew that their lives were gonna change so quickly like they did. Kayleigh came across the letter that she received that unfaithful day. She opened it up and began to read it. The letter said this:

Dear Kayleigh,

Hey babe, I just want to tell you how much I love you and that you mean the world to me. I don’t know how to express how much I love you. I don’t think words could explain how i feel about you. But ill try to anyway. You are the Sun to my day. The moon to my night. The light to my darkness. You are my everything! Baby I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you. Without you my world would be dark and gray. Kayleigh baby Will you marry me?

                                                love always and forever,

                                                                        Brian

After Kayleigh was finished reading the letter she put everything back in the box and then put it up. She went to bed thinking of her Brian as she did every night but tonight she also had the words to 'What Hurts The Most' stuck in her head. For some reason the song reminded her of Brian and how she felt. She went to her bedroom and opened her window to feel the cool night air.

As the wind blew in the room she could’ve swore she heard the faint whisper of Brian’s voice. And she did. "I love you baby and don’t worry I’m always with you watching over you".....She replied back saying " I know you are and I love you too. Oh and the answer to your question would be yes i would love to marry you." with that she fell asleep.

What hurts the most

Is being so close

And having so much to say

And watching you walk away

And never knowing

What could have been

And not seeing that loving you

Is what I was trying to do

What hurts the most

Is being so close

And having so much to say

And watching you walk away

And never knowing

What could have been

And not seeing that loving you

Is what I was trying to do

Not seeing that loving you

That’s what I was trying to do
