Epilogue

A week later, Nick had been removed from all tubes and monitors and moved out of ICU and into a private room.  Dr. Fergeson had run many tests on him, and they all showed that his body was accepting the new liver.

Nick’s appearance, as well as his spirits, had increased greatly.  His complexion looked vibrant and healthy for the first time in months, not the pale, sallow color it had been before.   He was still very thin, but he had regained some of his strength.

Brian and AJ had told him what had happened with Mandy, and it hurt him, but he had gotten over it.  He had known from the start that all her sympathy and affection toward him could be fake, and he was right.  He was finished with Mandy for good.  All he wanted now was to get out of the hospital and go home.

He knew that wouldn’t happen for awhile though.  He would need to be in the hospital longer, just to be sure that his liver really was functioning the way it should.   But he didn’t really care.  He felt good once again, and he had his life back.  That was all that mattered.

Nick longed to thank the person who had given him the liver.  He had been told that the donor was a twenty-year-old guy from Orlando as well, who had died in a car accident.  He wished the identity of the man was not such a secret, for he wanted so much to call his family, to thank them for their incredible gift.  Because of their generosity, even in their time of grief, he had been given new life.  He knew this time, he would not waste it.
