Chapter 34

An hour later, Dr. Benson came back into the room.

"Are any of us compatible?" AJ asked him anxiously.

"Actually, yes. One of you is," he said. He looked at Nick.

"Me?" Nick said, surprised. Dr. Benson nodded.

"I'm not compatible?" Kevin asked. Dr. Benson shook his head.

"No, you're Type A blood. Brian is Type B. Those two aren't compatible."

"So, is Nick going to be my donor?" Brian asked.

"I want to wait until your parents get here. They might be better matches," Dr. Benson said. "Do you have any siblings?"

"Yes. I have a brother in Kentucky. He's coming with my parents."

"Good. He also might be a good match. Have a nurse page me when they get here. I want to get them tested as soon as possible."

"How long will I be in the hospital?" Brian asked. "My wedding is in a month."

"Well, you might have to push it back a little. I can't promise you'll be out of the hospital and well by then," Dr. Benson told him.

"But I thought the bone marrow transplant would cure me," Brian protested.

"If it works, it will," Dr. Benson said. "Sometimes there are complications."

Brian sighed.

"I need to get back to work now," Dr. Benson said. "I'll be back when your family gets here." With that, he left the room.
