Finally, the
ambulance arrived at the hospital. It pulled up to the Emergency Room doors.
The paramedics threw open the door and unloaded Brian. The paramedic that was
still giving him chest compressions stayed on the stretcher and continued CPR.
The other two wheeled him towards the entrance, one of them still squeezing the
bag. Some doctors met them at the door and whisked the stretcher away. A nurse approached
Kevin.
"Why
don't you come with me to the waiting room, sir," she said kindly, taking
his arm and leading him over to a large waiting room. Kevin looked around and
saw Howie sitting in one of the chairs. He hurried over to him.
"Kev!"
Howie cried when he saw him.
"How's
Nicky?" Kevin asked, sitting next to him.
"I don't
know," Howie said, "but it doesn't look good. He still wasn't
breathing on the way to the hospital." His eyes filled with tears, but he
blinked them back. "How's Brian doing?" he asked.
"Not
good," Kevin said tearfully. "He has a fence post shoved through his
chest."
"What?"
Howie gasped.
"He was
conscious for awhile," Kevin continued, fighting back his tears, "but
then he stopped breathing on the way to the hospital." Kevin paused.
"Have you heard anything on AJ or Angel yet?" he asked.
Howie shook
his head. Kevin sighed. It was going to be a long wait.
