Chapter 21

By Rachel

Kevin threw open the plane door and ran outside as fast as his weak legs could carry him.  He just stood there and stared at the helicopter, thinking it was all just a hallucination.  He rubbed his eyes, trying to clear the image, and when he opened them again, tears of joy started to stream down his face, for the help he had prayed for was finally here.

Two paramedics and two police officers exited the helicopter and ran to Kevin.

"Sir, are you badly injured?  We got a report that there were three of you total. How are the others? And by the way, I'm Melony, and the other paramedic is Kathryn, and the two officers are David and Aaron," quickly introduced the younger paramedic.

"My name is Kevin, and to answer your questions, I'm not badly injured, but my two band mates aren't in very good shape. One has pneumonia, and one has suspected internal bleeding along with a broken leg and ribs, and also the pilot died in the crash, and his body is in the cockpit," answered Kevin as one of the police officers put a blanket over his shoulder to keep him warm.  He smiled gratefully at the young officer before him and lead the paramedics and police officers to the area where Nick and Brian were.

"Brian!  Help is here!  We are going to be alright!" exclaimed Kevin joyfully as he entered the plane.  "Brian?" he asked in a panicky voice when he received no answer.  Kevin broke into a run and made it to his cousin's side, immediately noticing that Brian was unconscious yet again, and blood was starting to drip out of his mouth.

Kevin gently turned his cousin's head to the side to let the blood drip out and moved out of the way when the other paramedic, Kathryn, took over the care of Brian as Aaron assisted her.  Kevin watched as Kathryn and Aaron gently picked up Brian and placed him on the stretcher, and placed a clean and warm blanket over his body, preparing to move him to the helicopter to be transported to the nearest hospital.  Kevin was about to follow the stretcher that held his cousin out to the helicopter but was stopped by a sudden shout.

"Kathryn, come here and help me move this kid away from the plane walls so he doesn't hurt himself.  He is having a febrile seizure, and his body temp is close to now close to 106 degrees. We have to get him to the hospital. He may have brain damage from the high fever. Aaron, you take the other patient to the helicopter, and David, you get the other stretcher and put the cadaver in the body bag, okay?" ordered Melody as she and Kathryn gently moved Nick's body away from the plane walls and waited for his seizure to end.

All Kevin could do was watch, and it was tearing him apart inside. Please let Nicky and Bri be okay, Kevin prayed as he watched Nick's seizure finally come to an end and watched as Melody and Kathryn gently moved Nick onto his side to let the fluid from his mouth drain.

"He must have bit his tongue slightly during the seizure, Kathryn.  But let's get him loaded onto the helicopter and quickly get him and the other patient along with Kevin to the hospital," stated Melody as both she and Kathryn gently but quickly placed Nick on the stretcher and also placed a clean and warm blanket around his shivering body.  "Come with us, Kevin," said Melody as she walked by, pushing the stretcher and grabbing his arm.

Once Brian, Nick, and Jason's body were loaded into the waiting helicopter, Kevin and the rescuers entered the aircraft, and moments later, they were taking off.  Kevin sat with Aaron and David, staying away from Brian and Nick so Melody and Kathryn could work on them.  He nearly broke into tears when he heard Nick let out a weak whimper in his unconscious state and rose to his feet, only to be gently pushed down by the two officers.

"They are in good hands, Kevin.  Have faith," said Aaron as he patted Kevin on the back and offered him a small grin. Kevin offered him a small grin in return and sat back, watching helplessly as Melody and Kathryn work on his younger brothers, hoping that the help didn't come too late to save them.
