Chapter 4

By Julie

When I awoke, I found myself looking up into a pair of concerned, blue eyes.

"Nick?" I asked softly. "What happened?"

"There was a crash, Bri," he said gently. "The plane crashed." I saw that his eyes were red and puffy and knew he had been crying. But what for? I didn't have the slightest idea how long I had been out or what had gone on when I was passed out.

"Is everyone alright?" I asked.

Nick shook his head sadly. "Jason's dead," he said.

"Oh, my God," I whispered. "What about everyone else?" Nick looked uncomfortable. Suddenly, Howie appeared next to me.

"Oh good, Bri, you're awake," he said, smiling down at me. "We were pretty worried about you."

"Are you okay, Howie?" I asked.

He nodded. "Yeah, I just got pretty shaken up. But I'm fine. AJ and Nick here are fine too."

I felt relieved at first. Then I realized they hadn't mentioned one person. "What about Kev?" I asked worriedly. With a sinking feeling, I realized he had been in the cockpit with Jason, and Jason was dead. I prayed that Kevin wasn't dead too.

"He's alive," Howie said, and I immediately felt relieved. "But he's hurt."

"Where is he?" I asked. "I want to see him." I started to sit up, but immediately, a wave of pain washed over my entire body. I cried out in agony.

"Bri, lie back," Howie urged, gently lying me back down. Tears stung my eyes. The pain was horrible.

"What happened to me?" I asked.

Howie looked down at me sympathetically. "You were hurt pretty bad yourself, Rok," he admitted. "You were standing up when we crashed. You probably have a concussion, your leg looks like it's broken, as well as probably a few ribs. And you might have other injuries that we don't even know about yet."

I wanted to cry, but I held it in, trying to be brave. "Thanks for telling me the truth, Howie," I said softly. Then I remembered Kevin. "What about Kev? Is he gonna be all right?" I asked.

"I don't know," Howie said. "AJ's with him now. He's still unconscious. And he has a lot of cuts from the windshield breaking when we crashed."

I looked around a little, realizing we were still in the plane. But our luggage had been thrown around everywhere, and one side of the plane was dented in. I figured the cockpit looked worse.

"Where are we?" I asked.

"We're not sure," Howie said. "Somewhere in the Rockies, it looks like. It's cold and snowy outside though, so we're staying right here."

"Did anyone call for help?" I asked.

Nick shook his head. "The radio doesn't work," he said. "It was destroyed."

"What about anyone's cell phone?"

"They wouldn't work way out here," Howie said. "And by the way our bags got thrown around, I would be surprised it they are even in one piece."

"Oh," I said, frowning. I began to get even more worried as I realized our situation. We were stuck somewhere in the Rocky Mountains during a blizzard without anyway to call for help. I doubted we had any food either. The only food I could think of was the Starbursts I had in my backpack to chew when we were landing so my ears would pop. I knew I wouldn't be needing those for that reason now. I began to get sleepy then, so I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, hoping someone would have found us by the time I woke up.
