Chapter 15

A week after Brian's surgery, he was in a private room, free from all tubes and monitors, and in good spirits. He was still very weak from the surgery, but his new heart, Elisa's heart, was working well, and he felt better than he had in months. The one thing he wanted was to see Alexa. She came that Friday, right after school. She had been given time off from work ever since Elisa had gotten in the crash. She just wasn't ready to go back to work yet.

That afternoon, she drove straight from school to the hospital. She asked for Brian's room number and hurried up to the fourth floor to see him. When she reached the room, the door was partly open. She stuck her head in. Brian was sitting up in bed reading a magazine.

"Knock, knock," she called. Brian looked up. A grin lit up his face.

"Hey, come on in," he said. She walked in and perched on the side of his bed. "Come here," he said, opening his arms for a hug. She crawled into his arms and hugged him tightly.

"I missed you," she said.

"I missed you too," he said. He pulled back from her and studied her. "Alexa, I just want to thank you so much. Without you and your sister I probably wouldn't be alive right now."

Alexa felt a lump rise in her throat at the mention of her sister. She swallowed it and looked at Brian.

"You don't need to thank me," she said. "I wanted her heart to go to you. I couldn't let you die too. I love you, Brian."

He grabbed her hand. "I love you too, Lex. Even more now than ever." He was silent for a moment. Then he studied her sadly. "How are you dealing with all of this?" he asked.

She shrugged. "I think about her a lot. I miss her so much. But it helps knowing that because of her, you're still alive." She smiled at him. "I believe that everything happens for a reason. I think Elisa died so that she could give you her heart. But then, some things I just don't understand. Like why you had to have this happen to you at all."

He smiled. "I know the answer to that one. It's simple. If I hadn't ever gotten sick, I wouldn't have met you."

She smiled back at him, remembering how they had met. She reached out and hugged him to her.

"I love you so much," she said. "I feel like I've known you my whole life."

"I feel the same way," he said, hugging her back. "Like you said, everything happens for a reason. I believe we were meant for each other." Alexa nodded and turned her face up towards his. She closed her eyes as her lips met his and they kissed. Everything was going to be all right. She knew then that they really were meant for each other.
