Chapter

"I'm leaving now, Mom," Alexa Morgan called as she headed out
the door.
"Okay, honey. I'll see you tonight. Bye!" her mother, Annette
Morgan, called back.
Alexa walked out of the door and got into her sky blue VW Bug. It was
brand new, a present from her parents for her eighteenth birthday, which had
been just a few weeks before. Her twin sister, Elisa, had gotten a bright
yellow one.
Alexa turned on the engine and pulled out of the driveway. She turned
on the radio. "Larger Than Life" by the Backstreet Boys was playing.
Alexa smiled. She wasn't a huge fan of them, but she did like their music. It
was her sister, Elisa, that loved them. Her favorite was AJ, and her room was
filled with posters of him. Alexa wasn't surprised by her sister's choice out
of all the Boys. Elisa was wild and crazy, just like AJ. She was very popular
and outgoing. Alexa was quieter. She was also popular, but not as outgoing as
Elisa. Alexa was more sensitive and shy. The only real similarity between them
was their looks. They looked exactly identical to each other, with their
coppery red hair and big blue eyes.
Alexa pulled into the parking lot of St. Joseph's Hospital. That was
where she worked. She had gotten a job there as a nurses' assistant. They had
been very shorthanded and had posted ads for assistants. Alexa's mother was the
one who urged her to get a job. She wanted Elisa to get one too, but Elisa
refused. Alexa didn't mind working there, since she had planned on going to
medical school in a few years. Plus, the hospital was very close to her house
on the outskirts of Lexington, Kentucky.
When Alexa entered the building, she went straight to the nurses
station in the Emergency Room. Some of the nurses greeted her warmly. Alexa had
been working there for a few months, so they knew her quite well.
They set her to work right away. Alexa began, but jerked her head up as
the Emergency Room doors burst open. Some paramedics hurried by, wheeling a man
on a stretcher. Alexa didn't get a good look at him, and wondered what had
happened to him. She was always curious when patients came in. She went back to
her work, still wondering.
