Chapter 8

The next day, as soon as visiting hours started, Alexa was at the hospital. She had not told anyone about Brian, not even Elisa. Although she and Elisa were twins they were not especially close. They loved each other very much, but they were complete opposites. Alexa knew Elisa would have loved to hear about her meeting Brian, but Brian had told her not to tell anyone, and she wanted to keep her promise.

As she took the elevator to the fourth floor, Alexa felt herself growing excited. She wasn't sure why. There was just something about Brian that had attracted her to him. She wasn't sure what it was though. He was hot, that was for sure, but there was more than just that. She had just felt connected to him when they had talked. It was strange, because she barely knew him.

Alexa pushed her thoughts away as she approached the door to his room. She opened the door slightly and peeked in. Brian was propped up in bed, spinning a small basketball on his finger. He looked up when she came into the room.

"Oh, hey, Alexa," he said, a smile lighting up his face.

"Hi, Brian," she said, smiling shyly at him.

"Come over here," he said, motioning to a chair beside his bed. She walked over to the chair and sat down.

"So, what's up?" she asked.

"Nothin' much," he replied. They looked at each other for a moment not sure of what to say. Finally Brian broke the silence. "So, where do you live, Alexa?"

"Kind of on the outside of Lexington. Right at the edge of town." Brian nodded.

"How 'bout you?" she asked.

"Well, normally I live in Orlando, but I'm kinda stuck up here for awhile. Do you already know why I'm here?"

"Well, yeah," Alexa said, blushing. "I kinda read your chart there." She motioned to the chart on the end of his bed.

He smiled. "That's okay," he said. "I probably would have too, if I was in your position." Alexa felt relieved.

"So, does anyone in the public know? The press or the fans?"

"I don't think so. We, the Backstreet Boys, haven't decided what to tell them," he sighed. "I guess I'm just kinda puttin' off tellin' them. I don't wanna have everyone feeling sorry for me."

"I understand," Alexa said, sympathetically. She did feel sorry for him.

Suddenly, the door burst open, and in walked Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson, and AJ McLean. Alexa's eyes widened. "Elisa would just die if she knew," she thought.

"Frick!" said Nick, coming to Brian's bedside. "Are you okay, man?"

"Sure," Brian said. "I'm fine."

"Kevin called us yesterday," Howie said, coming up beside to Nick. Alexa stepped back, out of the way. "We grabbed the first flight we could to come up here."

"Oh, you didn't have to come up here, guys," Brian said. "I'm fine." Alexa could tell that Brian secretly was glad they had come.

"So, Rok," AJ started, "who's this?" He motioned to Alexa, smiling. Alexa blushed.

"Oh, guys, meet Alexa," Brian said, motioning Alexa to come closer.

"Alexa, this is Nick, Howie, Kevin, and AJ." Alexa smiled at each of them. She noticed AJ checking her out and blushed again. "She works here," Brian continued.

"Oh, really?" Howie asked. "What do you do?"

"I'm a nurses' assistant," she replied.

"Oh, cool," Howie said.

They talked with each other until visiting hours were over. Then they all said good-bye to Brian and left.
