Chapter
1
It was mid-March when Brian was released from the hospital. He had had
no major problems after the transplant, and all the tests his doctor had run on
him had shown that his body was accepting Elisa's heart.
Brian had never met Elisa, but Alexa had shown him pictures of her and
told him all about her. The first time he saw the picture, he had almost begun
to cry. She had been exactly identical to Alexa, very pretty, with her red hair
and bright blue eyes.
Meanwhile, he and Alexa were deeply in love. Even though she was only
eighteen, seven years younger than him, Brian felt closer to her than he had
ever felt about any other girl, even his last serious girlfriend, Leighanne,
whom he had broken up with the year before. He knew he could tell Alexa
anything, and he was sure she felt the same way.

Alexa sat in her last hour class, watching the clock and waiting for
the bell to ring so she could go to Brian's house. Brian had been home from the
hospital for a week, and she had gone to see him everyday after school.
Brian's doctor had told him to get a lot of rest around the house for
at least two months before he could go back to touring with the Backstreet
Boys. Alexa was secretly glad that he wasn't aloud to start performing for
awhile because that meant that he could stay longer in Lexington and be near
her. She knew he couldn't wait to get back to touring, but she would miss him
terribly when he did leave. She still had two months of high school before she
graduated and went on to college. She had gotten accepted to the University of
Kentucky. Elisa had also been accepted there. "But she'll never be able to
go now," Alexa thought, sighing. Elisa would never be able to do any of
the things she had planned, not even graduating high school.
Finally, the bell rang. Alexa grabbed her books and hurried out to her
car. Then, she headed to Brian's.
