Chapter 10

Alexa drove to the airport and went inside quickly. She went up to the front counter and asked when the next flight to Indianapolis was. There was one that left in an hour. She used her credit card to buy herself a ticket for the flight. She didn't even bother to check her luggage; she just figured it would be easier to take it with her as a carry on.

After a forty-five minute wait, Alexa boarded the plane with the other passengers. Only when she sat down did she realize she had forgotten to call her parents to tell them where she was going. "Oh well," she thought. "I'll call when I get there."

The flight only lasted an hour and a half, but it seemed like forever. Finally, it landed. When Alexa got off of the plane, she hurried down the terminal of the airport until she found an exit. Then she ran outside and hailed a taxi. She told the driver the name of the hospital, and he drove her there. When they pulled up at the entrance of the large hospital, she paid the taxi driver and hurried inside.

Once inside, Alexa went to the main desk.

"May I help you?" the receptionist asked her.

"Yes," Alexa said. "I need the room number of Brian Littrell." The receptionist typed his name into a computer and peered at the screen over the rim of her glasses.

"Are you an immediate family member?" she asked.

"No, I'm his girlfriend. He's expecting me," Alexa said.

"Alright, he's in room 410," the receptionist told her.

"Okay, thanks," Alexa said, and went to the nearest elevator. She got off on the fourth floor and looked around.

"Alexa!" someone called. Alexa turned and saw AJ motioning to her from a waiting room to her left. She ran over to him.

"You made it," AJ said, hugging her.

"I want to see Brian," she said.

"Okay, come with me. The other guys are in with him now." Alexa followed AJ down the hall to room 410.

"Is he awake?" Alexa asked as they neared his room.

"Yeah, he's awake," AJ replied. "He'll be glad to see you."

Sure enough, when they entered the room, Brian's eyes lit up.

"Lex," he whispered hoarsely. She went to the side of his bed and hugged him tenderly. Then she smoothed his hair back and kissed his forehead.

"I love you, baby," she said, as she pulled back to look at him. He was propped up in bed, and hooked up to IV's and had breathing tubes in his nostrils. He looked frail and weak, but very happy to see her.

"I love you too, honey," Brian said, taking her hand. The other guys smiled at him and Alexa and left the room. Once they were gone, Brian patted a spot next to him on the bed. "Come here," he said. Alexa climbed up next to him and cuddled up against him.

"I should have listened to you, Lexie," he said, smiling sorrowfully at her.

"Don't say that," Alexa said. "This isn't your fault."

"Sure it is," he said. "If I had gotten some antibiotics like you said, I probably wouldn't be here right now."

"Well, it's too late now. Don't worry about that. Just think about getting better." They sat in silence for a moment. Suddenly, Alexa remembered her parents. "Oh, I need to call my parents. They don't know I'm here."

"You can borrow AJ's cell phone."

"Okay. I'll do it pretty soon," she said, not wanting to leave him. "Did anyone call your parents?"

"Yeah, Kev called them. They were going to catch a flight out here. They should be here soon."

Alexa stayed with Brian until his parents arrived. Then she went to call her parents.
