Chapter
14
"Alexa! Alexa, wake up!" someone whispered excitedly. Alexa
opened her eyes to see Nick hovering over her.
"What is it?" she mumbled, blinking.
"Brian woke up!" Nick cried happily. Alexa sat up abruptly
and leaped out of the chair she had been asleep in.
"Really!?" she cried.
"Yes!" he said, grinning widely. He grabbed her hand and they
raced down the hall to Brian's room.
The past few days had been hell for Alexa. It had taken the doctors
many tries to start Brian's heart again that day, but finally, it started
beating again.
He had still been in a coma ever since though, and the doctors said it
didn't look good. The pneumonia was taking over his lungs. The day after, Dr.
Simms had started him on some experimental drug. At first, there had been no
recognizable change, but now, Alexa was hoping that it actually had helped.
When she walked into the room, she hurried to Brian's bed and peered
down anxiously at him. He looked no different to her. His eyes were still
closed.
"Are you sure he's awake?" she asked Nick.
"Yeah, he just opened his eyes and looked at me," Nick
insisted. Alexa took one of Brian's hands and squeezed it.
"Brian, sweetie, wake up. It's me, Lex." Brian's eyelids
fluttered, and he opened them. "Oh Brian! You are awake!" Alexa
squealed with excitement. She gripped his hand tightly. "Oh baby, I love
you so much." She bent and kissed his forehead. His blue eyes brightened,
and she felt his hand squeeze hers. She knew he couldn't talk because he was
still on a ventilator. She didn't care though, she was just glad he was awake.
Things were looking better.

Everyone was overjoyed when they heard the news. They got Dr. Simms
right away. He said it was the experimental drug working. Over the next few days, he continued to give
Brian the drug, and the pneumonia started to go away.
A week later, it was almost gone, and he could breathe again, so the
doctor had him taken off the ventilator. After he had talked briefly to his
family and the rest of the guys, Brian asked to speak to Alexa privately.
"How are you doing, baby?" she asked, kissing him gently when
she saw him.
"I'm doing better," he said. His voice sounded weak and
hoarse. "Alexa, I have to tell you something," he began. "You
probably won't believe it, but I swear it's true."
"What is it, Bri?" she asked.
"Well, Lex, you know when my heart stopped, and they had to shock
me and everything?" She nodded, cringing as she remembered that horrible
day. "Well, when that happened, I was on my way to Heaven or something. It
was really weird. I was walking up these stairs, and there was this bright white
light at the top. There was someone standing at the top, but I couldn't tell
who it was. But when I got closer, I recognized her. I thought it was you at
first. It was a girl that looked just like you." Alexa gasped and gaped at
him.
"E…Elisa?" she stammered. He nodded.
"She was dressed all in white, and she was shimmery looking. She
was so beautiful. And she talked to me. I asked her if I was dead, and she said
it wasn't my time yet. Then she pointed over the railing of the stairs, and I
looked down. I could see into this room. I could see everything that was
happening, the doctors and nurses, and me. It was like watching myself die or
something. I saw you too. You were standing in the doorway screaming, and Howie
was holding you back." Alexa gasped again. What he said was true.
"Then Elisa said that you and I were meant for each other. She told me
something about me needing to do something about that, but she wouldn't tell me
what. Then, before I left, she told me to tell you all about this. She said she
would always be in Heaven watching over us. She said if I told you that, it
would help you get over her death. She told me to tell you and nobody else,
that it would be our little secret. Then we said good-bye. I walked back down
the stairs, and when I turned around, she was gone. Then everything went dark,
and when I woke up again, I was here, and Nick was with me." He stopped
and looked at Alexa. She was crying. He knew that she believed it.
He took her hand and kissed it tenderly. She crawled carefully onto the
bed and lay down beside him. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her
close to him. She lay with him for a long time, crying. Elisa lived on, as an
angel. She could hardly believe it, and yet she knew it was true.
