Chapter 8

"Lex, phone!" Kylie called. Alexa hurried out from the bathroom, where she had been washing her face. "It's Bri," Kylie said and handed the phone to Alexa.

"Hello?" she said.

"Hey, Lexie," Brian replied.

"Hi baby. Did you just get done with a concert?"

"Yep. St. Louis. We're heading to Cleveland tomorrow," he said. Then he started coughing hard.

"Are you okay, honey?" Alexa asked, concerned, when he had stopped. "That cough sounds bad."

"I'm fine," he said. His voice sounded hoarse.

"Are you sick or something?" she asked.

"Just a little cold," he replied. "Don't worry about it."

"Well, maybe you should take it easy. You shouldn't be performing when you're sick."

"Alexa, I can't just take it easy. We have five more shows to do, and we can't cancel any of them again."

"But, Bri, if you're sick-" she started, but he interrupted her.

"I'm not sick," he insisted. "It's just a little cold. It'll go away in a couple days."

"Well, why don't you at least go see a doctor and get some antibiotics," she said.

"Lex, come on. It's just a cold. I don't need any medicine. It'll run its course in a few days."

"But, Brian, you know your immune system is weak because of those immune-suppressant drugs you have to take. If you don't get any antibiotics, it could turn into something worse."

"It's okay, baby. Really. I can rest on the bus tomorrow when we're on our way to Cleveland," he insisted. Alexa was not satisfied, but she didn't want to argue with him.

"Look, just make sure you get lots of sleep, and don't push yourself too hard," she said.

"Okay, I'll be careful," he promised.

"Okay, babe. Well, I'll let you go now, so you can go to bed," she said.

"Alright, sweetie. I love you. Good night," he said, blowing her kiss through the phone. Alexa smiled.

"I love you too, honey," she said. "Good night. Sweet dreams." She, too, blew a kiss through the phone. Then they hung up.
