Chapter
11
As the night
went on, the Boys performed many of the songs from Millennium, as well
as some of the old songs from Backstreet Boys. Katelyn and Jennie sang
along and screamed their hearts out in the front row.
Towards the
middle of the concert, the guys left the stage to change outfits. When they
returned, they took their places on one side of the round stage, the side
facing Katelyn and Jennie.
"Next,
we're gonna do our fourth single off of Millennium, "The
One"!" Brian announced. The music began, and the guys began to sing.
"I'll be
the one!" they sang all together. Then AJ took over the first verse.
When Brian
took over, he came to the front of the stage, right in front of where Katelyn
was standing and sang, looking right at her. He winked at her and grinned as he
sang.
He's
singing this song to me, Katelyn thought, as she watched him continue to stare at her as he
sang on. How could he know that this is my favorite song?
As Katelyn
listened to the lyrics of the song, she realized it was a message for her. I'll
be the one, I'll be the one, who will make all your sorrows undone. I'll be the
light, I'll be the light. When you feel like there's nowhere to run, I'll be
the one, to hold you and make sure that you'll be alright, cause my fear is
gone, and I want to take you from darkness to light.
Katelyn felt
tears fill her eyes, as she looked up into his sparkling blue eyes. Her gaze
never left those eyes for the rest of the song.
When it was
over, she quickly wiped away her tears and glanced at Jennie, who seemed
oblivious to what had just happened.

The rest of
the concert was wonderful. They ended with "I Want It That Way",
grabbed hands, and gave one final bow together. Katelyn clapped until her hands
hurt and screamed until her throat was raw. She watched as the guys headed back
to the platform to be lowered back under the stage. The guys all grinned and
waved at the crowd. Then, just as they were being lowered down, Brian made a
fist with his left hand, stuck his thumb up and his pinky out, and held it up
to his left ear. He stared right at Katelyn as he did this and gave her a
slight nod. She understood the signal and gave him a small nod back, smiling as
he disappeared beneath the stage.
