Chapter
18
As they drove
through the city, Katelyn grew curious and asked, "Where are we going,
Brian?"
"Back to
Lexington for now," he replied. "Is that all right?"
"All
right? That's wonderful!" Katelyn said. Suddenly, her smile faded, and the
sparkle left her green eyes.
"What's
wrong?" Brian asked, noticing this.
"I wish
we could have talked about this more before you just decided to come to my house,"
Katelyn said. "I mean, do you have a plan or anything. What's going to
happen to me once I get to Lexington. And what's my mother going to think. I
feel like some kind of fugitive," she said.
"You're
not a fugitive," Brian said. "And don't worry about your mother. I'm
going to make sure she won't ever touch you again."
The confident
tone in his voice comforted Katelyn, making her think things were going to turn
out okay.
"But
where am I going to stay?" she asked.
"At my
parents' house," Brian said. "I've already discussed it with them,
and they said they would love to have you stay there."
"What
about you?" Katelyn asked, suddenly shy. "Where are you going to
be?"
"I'm
gonna stay there for awhile, to make sure you get settled and everything.
Eventually, the guys and I are going to Europe to record for out next album,
but that won't be until July. That means I'll be around for almost a
month."
"You're
staying in Lexington for a whole month just because of me?" Katelyn asked,
embarrassed, yet flattered.
"Sure, I
don't have anything better to do," Brian said. "Besides, I really
want to help you and get to know you better."
"What are
you going to do about my mother?" Katelyn asked. "Are you going to
call the police or something?"
"Yes.
That's the first thing I'm going to do when we get to Lexington."
"You're
not going to get her arrested are you?" Katelyn asked.
"I don't
know. I guess that's up to the police or a judge, depending on if we would have
to go to court or something," Brian replied.
"Brian, I
know she's hurt me, and I don't love her. But still, she is my mother, and I
don't want her to have to stay in jail for a long time. She has a lot of
problems, and she doesn't think before she acts. All I want is for her not to
have custody of me anymore so that I don't have to live with her anymore."
Brian began to
get emotional as he listened to what she was saying. He didn't know for how
long she'd been abused, but he could tell how much her mother had hurt her,
physically and mentally. Yet, still, she cared enough for her mother that she
didn't want to send her to jail. This showed Brian what a sweet, caring person
she was, and he admired even more.
