Chapter 3

The next afternoon, Katelyn was once again locked in her bedroom, reading a book and listening to the radio. She dropped her book in delight when she heard "The One" come on the radio. She smiled and sang along to the entire song.

"And that was the Backstreet Boys with 'The One'," the radio DJ said when the song ended. "And have we got a big surprise for all you Bsb fans out there. The Backstreet Boys will be performing a charity concert next weekend in Lexington, Kentucky, and we here at WXLB 98.3 want to send you there! If you can be the fifteenth caller, you will receive two tickets to the concert, as well as backstage passes! Call 567-3856 right now!"

Katelyn gasped and grabbed her phone. She punched in the numbers quickly and put the phone to her ear.

"Hello, you've reached WXLB 98.3. What is your name, please?" a woman asked.

"Katelyn," Katelyn said, surprised she got through.

"Congratulations, Katelyn, you are our fifteenth caller!" the woman cried.

Katelyn gasped and nearly dropped the phone, she was so surprised.

"We have out fifteenth caller right here on the line," the DJ said. "Katelyn, are you there?"

"Y…yes," Katelyn said, still in shock.

"You have just won two tickets and backstage passes to see the Backstreet Boys in Lexington, Kentucky! How do you feel?"

"I…I just can't believe it!" she cried happily.

"Well, it's true. You and a friend or family member of your choice will get an all-expense paid trip to Lexington to meet the Boys!"

Katelyn could feel happy tears filling her eyes. She was so excited and overjoyed she could barely speak. She was finally going to meet her idols!

After she got off the phone with the radio DJ, Katelyn talked on the phone for a few minutes with a lady that worked for the radio station, who gave her all the details. She and one other person would ride in a limo from her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio to Lexington the next Saturday. They would get there in the afternoon to check into their hotel. The concert started at eight. They would be there at six-thirty for the hour-long meet and greet before the show started. Then they would have front row tickets to see the show. All of the proceeds of the show were going to Brian's charity.

When Katelyn finally got off the phone, she just collapsed onto her bed and stared up at the ceiling, still unable to believe her luck. After a few minutes of this, her happiness slowly diminished as she realized her mother would never let her go. Janet would think it was a silly waste of time and would never let her daughter go to Kentucky by herself. And Katelyn knew she would never take her mother as her companion.

As she thought and thought about the situation, a plan began to form in her head. What if she just didn't tell her mother about it? Janet was usually out drinking on Saturday nights anyway. She would get home late, and Katelyn would be long gone by then anyway. Even then, Janet might be so drunk, she might not even notice her daughter was gone until the next morning.

Katelyn thought long and hard about it and finally decided what to do. She was going to call her best friend, Jennie Brookman, to come with her and not even tell her mother. They could leave in the limo Saturday morning after her mother left for work, and her mother wouldn't even know that she was gone until it was too late.

Katelyn knew she would have hell to pay when she got home Sunday afternoon, but she decided she would face that later. Nothing, not even one of her mother's beatings, could keep her from meeting the Backstreet Boys.
