Chapter
6
Brian stayed
for two more weeks in Lexington with his parents. He spent most of his time
just lying in bed or on the couch. He had rented a pair of crutches, but it
hurt his ribs and collarbone to use them, so he only used them if he absolutely
had to. His mother waited on him hand and foot.
After two
weeks, he decided to go back to Florida. Jackie bought plane tickets for
herself and for him to fly to Orlando. She worried about Brian being able to
make it all the way from Lexington to Orlando by himself while he was on
crutches and insisted she go with him and stay for a few days.
So, they flew
down to Florida, and Jackie stayed at Brian's house for three days. Brian's
fiancée, Leighanne, was in Europe working on a movie, so it was just the two of
them.
Brian loved
his mother, but he was glad when she finally flew back to Kentucky. She worried
too much about him, and it got on his nerves. He was in a lot of pain most of
the time, but he hid that from her. He was taking his pain pills everyday, but
they didn't seem to help much.

The day after
Jackie left, Nick called to invite Brian over for a barbecue. The other Boys
would be there too.
Brian was
looking forward to it, since he hadn't seen any of the guys since before the
accident. The morning of the barbecue, he took his regular dosage of his opium
pills. As he turned away from the kitchen counter, he banged his leg.
"Shit!"
Brian yelled, his leg throbbing. The pain was so bad it made tears come to his
eyes. "I don't want to be hurting like this over at Nick's house," he
thought. Suddenly, he got an idea. What if he took an extra dose of opium? That
would surely keep away his pain. Without a second thought, Brian hobbled back
to the counter and gulped down two more of the little brown pills.
By that
afternoon, he was in Nick's backyard having a great time. The extra pain
medication had worked wonderfully. For once, his leg wasn't throbbing with
pain.
"Dr.
Martin must have accidentally prescribed the wrong dosage," Brian thought.
"I'll start taking four pills instead of just two."
