Chapter

Over the next
few weeks, Brian's pain grew worse, and the opium pills didn't seem to help as
much. So, Brian added an extra dose during lunch. Now, he was taking four pills
three times a day. He wondered why he had to take so much to keep his leg from
hurting, but he didn't really think much of it. It never occurred to him that
he had a serious problem.

When summer
rolled around, Brian, Kevin, AJ, Howie, and Nick packed their bags and flew to
the Bahamas, where they would spend a few weeks working on songs for their next
album. They were supposed to have gone in the spring, but because of Brian's
accident, they had postponed the trip until June.
Brian had been
given a walking cast, which made it easier to get around without using
crutches. He made sure he was well stocked with opium for the trip, not knowing
how much he would need.

While in the
Bahamas, the guys were either writing songs or recording everyday. Sometimes,
they just worked for the morning and went site seeing in the afternoon. Other
days, they worked for most of the day.
When they
recorded for the first time, Brian noticed that he wasn't singing was well as
he usually did. It seemed like he had to take more breaths than normal during a
song.
The other guys
noticed this too. They also noticed that Brian looked awfully tired and thin
lately. They just figured he was in pain and hadn't yet regained his strength
from the accident, since he hadn't been able to get much exercise because of
his broken leg. They never realized something could be seriously wrong.
