Chapter 3

Nick sucked in a breath.  “Your brother?”

She nodded.

Nick smiled sympathetically.  “I’m sorry,” he said softly.

Angela shrugged.  “It’s not your fault,” she said.  “I just thought you might like to know.  I wasn’t completely sure, but I put everything together, and it’s very likely that he was your donor.  After all, he was a twenty year old from Orlando, and he died from a car accident the day you received your transplant.”

Nick nodded.  “Well, then I should be thanking you,” he said.  “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

“You’re welcome,” Angela said.  “Really, you shouldn’t be thanking me though.  I wasn’t even there when the decision was made to donate his organs.”

“Well, thank your family for me then,” Nick said.

“I will,” Angela said, smiling slightly at him.

“I’m sorry that you had to lose him, even if it did save me life,” Nick said.

“Don’t be sorry,” Angela said again.  “He and I weren’t even that close.  Actually, we didn’t even know each other that well.  You see, we were really step brother and sister.  My dad married his mom, and he lived separately from them, while I lived with my mom, so we really didn’t talk too much.”

“Oh,” Nick said.  He paused a minute, then changing the subject, asked, “So, why are you here today?  Were you in the TRL audience or something, or do you work here?”

“Neither,” she replied.  “I was down the hall in a different part of the studio, taping a show.”

“Oh really?” Nick asked.  “Cool.  What show?”

“This show that MTV’s going to have on soon that’s a tribute to Justin Timberlake, from ‘N Sync,” she replied.

“Oh,” Nick said.  “So, you a big ‘N Sync fan then?”

She shrugged.  “I dunno, I guess so,” she said.  He stared at her, extremely puzzled by this comment.  She laughed slightly and said, “I guess I should have told you more about my brother,” she said.   “You see, my brother was Justin Timberlake.”

(AN:  As I’m sure you all know, I am NOT an ‘N Sync fan at all, and I had to do some research just to find out Justin’s parents’ names.  I have no clue if he has a stepsister or not, but in this story, we’ll just pretend he does. LOL)

Nick’s mouth dropped open in shock.  “You’re kidding,” he gasped.

She shook her head.  “No, not at all,” she said.  “His mom’s name is Lynn Harless.  She’s married to my dad, Paul Harless.   That makes him my step-brother.”

Nick gaped at her, still shocked.  “So… I have Justin Timberlake’s liver in me?” he asked.

She nodded.  “I don’t know if you should let the press get a hold of that one though,” she said, laughing slightly.

He chuckled.  “Man, that would be huge,” he said.

“It’s ironic, huh?” Angela asked suddenly.

“What is?” Nick asked.

“The fact that the most popular member of one of the most famous boybands in the world died, and his liver went to the most popular member of the other most famous boyband in the world,” Angela said, laughing.  “Coincidence… or not?  I think whoever thought that one up was just looking to make some money selling this story to the media.”

Nick laughed only slightly, still shocked at what he had just found out.  He wasn’t sure what to think.  It was ironic that Nick had received the liver of a man he had not been able to stand when he had been alive.  Knowing this made Nick feel even guiltier for disliking Justin before.  Without Justin, he could be dead now, and he knew it.  He owed his life to Justin Timberlake.
