Chapter 7

Another month passed, and before Nick knew it, it was the start of December, marking the beginning of the Christmas season as well.

One Saturday night in mid – December, the phone rang at Nick’s house.

“Hello?” he asked, picking it up.

“Hi, Nick, it’s Angela,” came Angela’s voice.

“Hey, Ang,” Nick said.  “How are you?”

“Great.  You?”

“I’m good too,” he said.

“That’s good,” she replied.  “What are you doing for Christmas?  Are you going to your parents house or off on vacation, or what?”

“Nope, I’m not going anywhere,” he said.  “My family’s already made plans to fly here instead of me going there, so it looks like I’m having Christmas at my house.”

“That’ll be nice,” she said.

”What about you?  You going anywhere?” Nick asked.

“Well, I get out for break on the twentieth, and then I’m out of school until the second week in January.   I’m spending Christmas here with my mom and my grandparents, and then I was going to fly down to Orlando to stay with my dad and stepmom for a few days after Christmas,” she said.

A slow smile spread over Nick’s face.  “You’ll be here in Orlando?” he asked, for confirmation.

“Sure will be,” she replied.  “Do you think we could get together while I’m there?”

“Of course,” Nick said, hoping he didn’t sound overly eager.  “Do you think Lynn will have a problem with that?”

“She doesn’t have to know,” Angela said.  “After all, I’m almost nineteen, and I can make my own decisions without telling her everything.  Plus, she’s not even my real mother.”

“Yeah,” Nick said.  “Well, that’ll be great.  I can’t wait to see you again.”

“Yeah, I know,” Angela said.  “It’ll be fun.”

Suddenly, the call waiting on Nick’s phone beeped, signaling that someone else was trying to call him.  “Hey, Ang, I’ve got another call.  Hang on a minute,” he said quickly, putting her on hold and switching to the other line.
