AJ
threw the heavy door which led to the third floor from the stair way back and
ran towards the waiting room. After taking a few seconds to get to the waiting
room, he stopped to catch his breath and looked around with wide eyes.
“Dammit,” he cursed as he realized no one was in the room. He turned sharply
and nearly collided with Kevin who was carrying two cups of coffee.
“Did
you find Bri?” Kevin asked anxiously as he looked around the room several
times.
“Kev
there was an accident” AJ started to say
“An
accident!” interrupted Kevin “Where is he?”
“In
the ER being checked out” replied AJ. “But Kevin wait!!!” he shouted as Kevin
set down the coffee and ran for the door that led to the stairs.
AJ
sighed loudly in defeat and broke into a run trying to catch up with his
friend, who he knew was practically sick with worry. He ran down the stairs and
reached the Emergency Room about a minute after Kevin left, having the
disadvantage of shorter legs. As he was reaching out to push the door open, he
heard the sound of someone screaming coming from the Emergency Room. He opened
the door and quietly crept into the room rushing over to the desk where a
slightly shaken Nell stood as Kevin yelled at her demanding to know where his
cousin was and if he is ok.
“Kev,
Kev!! Calm down” yelled AJ as he approached the scene.
“But
she won’t tell me where my cousin is.” hissed Kevin through clenched teeth.
“If
you quit yelling at her she might just tell ya.” said AJ sarcastically as he
rolled his eyes.
“So
Nell Honey? Can you please tell us where Brian is?”AJ asked sweetly as he
clasped his hand over Kevin’s mouth to prevent him from speaking.
Nell
nodded and turned around. “I have to make sure Dr. McRubbin is finished
examining your friend. Excuse me.” she said as she walked down the short
hallway and knocked on the door and opening it a few seconds later.
After
a few moments of waiting impatiently, Nell entered the room again and told them
they can go see Brian.
AJ
watched as Kevin got up and ran to the room that Nell had come out of. He got
up and let out a frustrated groan and walked briskly towards the room. He
entered the room and saw Kevin sitting on the end of the bed where Brian was,
talking gently to his cousin.
“So
what is wrong with him, Dr. McRubbin?” asked AJ as the older man looked up from
his chart he was writing in.
“Your
friend had a deep cut from where he fell but we fixed him right up and the
wound required 12 stitches. He is also in slight shock as a result of what
happened.” he replied
AJ
nodded in reply and walked over to the bed where both Kevin and Brian were.
“How ya doing Rok?” asked AJ.
Brian
didn’t respond, he just looked up at AJ with tear-filled eyes as he continued
to shake.
“Are
you keeping him overnight for observation, Doctor?” Kevin spoke up.
Dr.
McRubbin shook his head and looked back down at the chart in his hands. “No sir
he should be fine. When you gentlemen are ready to take him home, tell Nell at
the desk and she will give you the discharge papers.”
Both
AJ and Kevin nodded and said “Thank you” at the same time. They looked at each
other and grinned momentarily, fighting the urge to actually be childish and
say “Jinx”.
After
making one last note on his chart, Dr. McRubbin excused himself and exited the
room.
“Ready
to go Bri?” asked AJ as he helped Kevin sit Brian in a upright position.
He
grinned slightly as he seen Brian nod his head and turned his head towards
Kevin “Should I go tell D what is going on?” AJ asked.
“Yeah
go ahead” he heard in reply “I can handle Brian, you just tell D about what
happened and tell him we are taking Bri home and I will meet you at the car.”
“Ok
see ya in a bit.”
AJ
walked over towards the stairs but changed his mind realizing how tired he was.
He made it to the elevators and pushed the up button, secretly pleased that the
elevator took only a few seconds to arrive.
After
the short elevator ride, AJ exited the elevator and turned towards the room
where Nick was being kept. His eyes opened in shock as he saw Howie run quickly
towards him and he felt his heart stop momentarily, fearing the worse had
happened.
