Chapter 9

Kevin stood staring at Nick's motionless body for a few more seconds before cautiously moving towards him.  When he reached the younger man's body, he noticed that Nick's chest wasn't rising and falling like it should have been if he was breathing, and knelt down by him as he put two fingers on his neck to feel for a pulse.

"Brian help me!" shouted Kevin when he detected no pulse and knew he needed to perform CPR.  Kevin looked up at Brian and seen Brian staring at the top level of the house to figure out where Nick fell from.  Kevin let out a loud sigh of relief as Howie walked over and told him he could help, then the two oldest members set to the task of trying to help the youngest member the best they could, and they wasn't going to give up.

Brian stared up towards the upper level of the large house trying to figure out exactly where Nick fell from as tears streamed down his face and showing no sign of slowing down.  As his eyes scanned from the balcony to the other rooms, a bright flash of light caught his eyes and his eyes darted back towards the balcony.  His breath nearly caught in his throat when he saw what he saw looked like a man illuminated by a bright white light and rubbed his eyes convinced his eyes were playing tricks on him.  When he opened them, the figure that he saw before wasn't there much to Brian's belief.

When Brian's attention finally turned to Nick, he then realized that the paramedics were there and were putting a brace around his neck as the gently placed him on a back board.

"When did they get here?" he asked himself while looking around and noticing the paramedics load Nick into the ambulance.  He jumped when someone tapped him on the shoulder and he quickly spun around, facing Howie.

"Hey Bri they said we need to follow them to the hospital, there isn't enough room in the ambulance for us to ride with him." he said as he gave Brian small smile.  Brian just nodded and walked towards the light blue Taurus and got into the back and sat beside of his cousin.  Howie followed and climbed into the passenger's said and AJ climbed into the driver's seat after getting the keys from Kevin.  AJ started up the car and solemnly followed the ambulance as silence surrounded him.

The silence was cut short by a loud sob and AJ turned on the over head light to see what was wrong and heard Kevin's voice saying "It is my stupid fault this happened" AJ looked into the rearview mirror and seen Brian try to give his cousin a hug and his eyes widened at the sight of Brian being roughly pushed away.

"Don't touch me Bri.  I don't even know how you can stand the sight of me, I probably killed your best friend." Kevin yelled as he sobbed again loudly.   AJ looked up in the rearview mirror just in time too see Brian's face pale and tears reenter his blue eyes.

"What do you mean Kev?" asked Brian in a shaky voice.

"You know what I mean Bri.  He probably jumped cause he thought that everything bad that had happened was his fault and I'm the one who put it in his head, and he believed it."

Brian was about to open his mouth to respond but was interrupted by the car stopping and the overhead light going out.  "We are here guys" AJ said.  Both Kevin and Brian nodded and climbed out of the car, running towards the emergency room entrance, scared of what they would find.

Once the guys all go to the emergency room, a nurse told them to go to the waiting room and a doctor would be along as soon as possible to give them the report of Nick's condition.

After waiting two hours, a young doctor approached the young men and introduced himself as Dr. MacDonald with a slight Scottish accent.  "What is Nick's condition sir?" asked Howie anxiously.

Dr. MacDonald looked down at the charts in his hands and made eye contact with the young men before him.  "It seems Nickolas fell backwards and landed on his head at full force.  Right now we are working on removing the fluid that has surrounded his brain and caused it to swell.  I'm going to be honest with you gentlemen, your friend took a hard hit when he fell and it is a good chance it caused brain damage."  Those are the last words Brian heard before his vision wavered and a roaring sound entered his ears.  The last sound he heard was the loud thump of his body hitting the floor before his whole world went black.
