Chapter

Half an hour
later, a doctor came into the waiting room.
"Who here
is with Morgan Ashmore?" he asked. Brian jumped at the sound of his voice.
"That's
us," he said, getting up. The doctor walked towards them.
"Hello,
my name is Dr. Mark Wilson," the doctor said. Brian and Nick quickly
introduced themselves.
"How is
Morgan?" Brian asked.
"Well, I
pulled up her chart when she got here, and it seems she had a heart condition,
correct?" Brian nodded.
"She's
been waiting for a heart transplant," he said.
"Well,
I'll be honest with you," Dr. Wilson started. "It doesn't look good.
She suffered a heart attack. We got her heart started again, but it is very
weak. I'm afraid that if she doesn't get a transplant soon, she'll die."
Brian took a deep breath and tried to hold back the tears that were threatening
to erupt.
"Isn't
there anything else you can do for her?" he asked.
Dr. Wilson
shook his head slowly. "She needs a heart transplant. That's her only
hope. The only thing we can do is give her morphine so she won't be in any
pain."
"Is she
awake?" Brian asked.
"No,
she's still unconscious right now," Dr. Wilson replied. "We're going
to admit her and take her up to ICU. You can see her once she had been
moved."
"Okay,
thanks," Nick said. Dr. Wilson left and Nick and Brian sat back down.
Brian slumped over and buried his head in his hands. Nick put his hand on
Brian's back.
"Don't
give up hope, Brian," he said. "It'll be okay. She'll get a
transplant soon and everything will be fine."
Brian wanted
to believe Nick's words, but he knew that Morgan might die. He said a silent
prayer that what Nick said would be true.
