Angry Night
“Anita?!
Kevin?!” a muffled surprised voice awakened me.
I
pulled my knotted blonde hair away from my face. Elyssa stood in the
doorway looking sort of shocked.
“Whoa,
guys, I’m sorry. I’ll be like waiting downstairs,” she quickly closed the
door and ran off.
For
a moment I was extremely confused. What in the hell was she talking
about? Then I put two and two together. Me and Kevin in bed.
“Crap,”
I thought. “Just what I need right now.”
I
jumped out of bed and out the door.
“What’s
going on?” I heard a still half-asleep Kevin grumble.
“Elyssa
thinks you screwed me,” I called back.
“WHAT?”
Kevin shouted as I dashed down the staircase.
“Sorry,”
Elyssa said from the kitchen.
I
skidded to a stop. I’d been headed for the living room.
“I
shouldn’t have jumped to any conclusions. Kevin wouldn’t do that.”
“What?”
I protested feeling a little offended. “So I would, huh?”
“Oh,
God no! That’s not what I meant Anita,” Elyssa replied looking equally
offended.
“Then
I’d like to know what you did mean,” I crossed my arms across my chest waiting
for an explanation.
“It
was really nothing, just a first reaction. I saw you two lying there and
I thought Kevin might have tried to take advantage of you.”
“And
you think I would have let him?” I retorted.
Elyssa
surprised me a bit by laughing.
“No
Anita you are about the last person who would let any guy take advantage of
you.”
I
relaxed, she was right. I was kind of known for my girl power type
attitude. Just then Kevin bolted into the room.
“Elyssa
I didn’t do anything. I swear!” he spat out quickly.
“She
knows Kevin, don’t worry.”
He
scrunched up his face.
“Okay
. . . but I thought . . . never mind,” Kevin simply let it go.
“So
what the hell are you doing here anyway?” I asked.
My
good moods were very short lived lately. Elyssa rolled her eyes before
answering.
“Michaela
and I were going to visit Brian and we thought that you might want to come
since you really haven’t been to see him yet.” Then she paused for a
moment. Her hand flew to her forehead. “Michaela is still in the
car!”
“Nope,
I’m right here.”
Elyssa
spun around to find Michaela right behind her.
“Oh,
Mickey I’m sorry I left you in there. I’m losing it, I swear,” Elyssa
stated and sat down looking sort of defeated.
“Kevin
what are you doing here?” Michaela asked.
“I’m
here for moral support,” he said placing an arm around my shoulder.
“So
are you two coming or not?” Elyssa finally asked.
“Yeah,
I guess so. Can I take a shower first?”
“Sure.”
About
twenty minutes later we were all packed into Elyssa’s
Mercedes on the way to the hospital.
“What
is with the weather?” I inquired looking at the sky.
Yesterday
it had been 95 degrees and clear skies. Today it was totally overcast,
the temperature had dropped to the mid-eighties and rain was sprinkling the
windshield.
“There’s
a hurricane ravaging the coast. It’s causing bad weather over the entire
state. They are calling hurricane Craig the most devastating hurricane in
over 100 years,” Kevin informed us.
Soon
enough we were in the waiting room in ICU.
“We
are here to see Brian Littrell,” Elyssa told the nurse behind the desk.
“You’ll
have to wait. He is already seeing visitors.”
“Okay,
thanks.”
We
all sat down and waited. But we didn’t have to wait long. Soon
Brain’s parents entered the room talking to a doctor.
“Oh
Elyssa, Kevin. Good you’re here,” Harold Littrell said. “We have
something we need to tell you.”
I
immediately knew that it wasn’t good news. Mrs. Littrell looked as though
she’d cried a river. Somehow she looked older and more tired than a woman
of her age did. Mr. Littrell looked as though the spark had been drained
from his eyes. It was not good, definitely not good.
“It’s
about Brian. His future has been decided,” the doctor said.
Everyone
held their breath.
