Chapter 12
Alex was able to slip away from them
and take a detour to the restrooms faraway from where they were. There he
stared at what he had become a total opposite to what he had thought. First of
all gravity and the years did show on him now. Second he was a father and well
that’s what he wanted, but then he remembered saying he did not want any kids
when he was at the top of his life. What happened to that guy? The one that was
spontaneous and full of life? Was it true what he read in a magazine long time
ago? That when you’re in band you’re bound to never succeed solo? Could it be
true that he was like that because he was with the Backstreet boys? Now that he’s
older and well has his own thing going that he lost his Pizzazz? No, that
couldn’t be it, could it be that even though he was proud of being sober for so
long he needed his old friend alcohol back. The Tequila shots, Jack Daniels,
beer and so on. maybe that was what made him cool and spontaneous. He was confused maybe he needed to talk to
his mother he needed her here with him… so slowly he pulled out his phone and
dialed his mom’s number….

“Hey, where did the man go? He was
just behinds us.” Said Amber as she looked behind and around her trying to spot
the man, who gave her goose bumps and that made her feel warm inside.
“Maybe he…decided not to come. Don’t
worry Amber he will find a way to where he needs to be,” said Rick as he and
Amber stepped into the elevator.
“Yeah, you’re right I guess?” said
Amber as she stuck her head out one more time to reassure herself he wasn’t
there. Amber shook her head trying to shake the feeling she’d gotten with that
man. That man, what made him so interesting? It was like she knew him from long
time ago, yet she had never seen this man before or had she?

What was all that about? She couldn’t
believe what her son had told her. Now there she was making flight arrangements
to Dallas. It took him more than a month to return her calls and only to
request her to get to Dallas? She understood her son and his new phase in life
where he tried to be more independent from her, but she deserved to be
acknowledged once in while. All she wanted to know was if he was ok, he was
going throw a divorce. She sighed as she remembered all her son had been
through and how much it had changed him. She never thought it would change him
so much, but it had; some for the good but some for the bad. Yeah, he was sober
and more mature but she lost the bond he had with her. They did talk but not
like when he was young and worry free, but that was a risk she took when she
realized that her son was a true performer. She was in the border line to being
70 and yet he acted like she was going to live forever! But she knew better and
she knew that it wouldn’t be long till she joined her parents in heaven. Maybe
this trip could finally bring some sense to him. She just hoped it would
because her health was fading. She didn’t know if he chose to ignore it or he
really didn’t see it…

“As a single thirty-five year old
woman who never married I would know that being lonely is hard; not having
someone by your side. Pam, but you have Amber sweetie you need to come out of
this. You know I called him…he’s on his way here, he might be here already. Pam
I never understood you, you had everything you wanted a career, you were
engaged; you were on top of your life. Yet you weren’t happy I could always
tell in your eyes that you weren’t. Victor was a great guy, but he wasn’t for
you Pam you needed someone who looked at you with love, not as a prize. Then
you meet this guy who is not only famous but is a bad boy to the core and then
I see it the love in your eyes. Not to mention the total opposite of you! But
knowing you; you ignored these feelings and continued your charade with Victor
and you did a good job at it. I actually believed it and that’s where my heart
betrayed me. I starting feeling things for Alex and somehow thought he would
see me as more than his friend’s sister….but it never happened. I know that if
you heard me right now you’re surprised sis but it’s true I was in love with
Alex. I know it may sound crazy but that’s how I felt and somehow I thought he
could love me too. I don’t know if he ever told you but I confronted him and
told him he should leave you alone. I told him that you were in love with
Victor and that’s why you were going to marry him. To my surprise he said he
knew that and that he wasn’t planning on coming between you and Victor. He
believed you only liked him as a friend and was not willing to loose your
friendship for his feelings which he said he was not sure of. So I told him I
liked him to give me a chance. He smiled and told me as flattering as my
feelings for him were he couldn’t do that. He told me that I was a sweet girl
but that I deserved someone better than him and that actually felt the same for
me. He left the next day back to California we didn’t hear from until you
called him so he could come to your wedding. You know how that ended Pam, I
just needed to let you know this because it’s been killing me for 17 years and
I haven’t been able to move on. I’ve been jealous of you since we were young to
me it seemed like you always got the best of everything. Till you left and I
realized that you weren’t as perfect as mom and dad considered you. I saw the
toll it took on dad, mom, and me. Pam, as stubborn as dad was he always loved
you, I heard him cry many times for you. Dad was proud of you even though he never
told you; he was proud of your decision to raise a child on your own and I know
that if he was here right now he would be proud of how good you have done with
Amber. When I spoke to him the last time he….told me that he was proud of me
and you. That he loved you and me more than anything in this world. I knew then
that he had forgiven you and that well, he was a human also. Even though he
rejected seeing you and talking to you till his last day that was only a front
deep inside he had forgiven you... You see Pam you need to come out of this for
many reasons but the main one is Amber. Besides I have to admit something to
you, since you came back from California you look different like you had hope.
Like you and Alex may have a chance to finally form a family or a least give a
dating a chance. I know that this time it could workout…huh, I don’t even know
if you are listening to me or not but I want you to know that we are ready for
you to come out of this.” Gracie was interrupted by her cell phone vibrating in
her pocket. She looked at the caller ID and knew she had to take this call so
she looked at her sister one more time and walked out the room. She felt like a
ton of weight had been lifted from her even if her sister had not heard her.
