Chapter 18

Lately she was able to hear voices some she recognized some she didn’t. She was getting frustrated she could not move, yet she felt when they touched and moved her. She was trying to remember how she got to be in this position; she heard a raspy voice talking. She quickly paid attention to what he was saying, as she realized who it was she felt like smiling, yet nothing. she couldn’t even open her eyes. She felt like screaming when she heard singing, Alex was singing her song; she calmed herself and listened to his beautiful voice. His voice was still beautiful and she did not know if he could see or feel her shiver but she was shivering as she heard him sing. She even laughed when he said that Howie would kill him for killing the song. She wanted to tell him that he had actually done a great job. She concentrated on opening her eyes she had forgotten that Alex was near her till she felt his lips on hers. His lips so warm and soft on hers she wanted to cry why couldn’t she wake up? God, please she screamed and with that she was able to open her eyes! She was greeted with bright lights; she was forced to close them again. But to her dismay she did here the door shut, Alex was gone. Slowly she opened her eyes again having them adjust to the light room. As her eyes adjusted she realized she was in a hospital room she soon started to panic.

“Dr. Calloway your patient Pamela Fernandez monitor is showing a lot activity right at this moment.”

“What, ok well I am going to go check on her can you please page the RN in charge of her.”  As Doctor Calloway walked into her room she was greeted with a pair of brown eyes. “Hi, Pamela my name is Naomi Calloway, welcome back I am going to check you a bit is that ok?

Amber walked out of school searching for her aunt’s car. To her surprise instead her father and grandmother were there. She smiled as she saw them standing outside the rental he had been driving. She started walking toward them, when she felt a tap on her shoulder. “Hey, Rick how are you?”

“Good how about you?”

“Good, I guess. Listen I am sorry for ignoring you lately but I have so much going on that I haven’t had time to spend with you.”

“It’s ok; I understand you are reuniting with your father. It’s understandable. So I’ll walk you to your aunt’s car?”

“Uhm, ok it’s just not my aunt it’s my father and grandmother. It’s good so you can meet them.”

After introducing Rick and saying good bye she left with her father and grandma. She was curious to what they wanted to talk to her about but it sounded serious….

Gracie, was tired, she had worked her a** off that day. She was getting into her car when her phone rang. Recognizing Dr. Calloway’s number she answered quickly. “Hello?”

“Gracie she’s awake, she wants to see you.”

Gracie felt tears coming down her face as she repeated in her head; “she’s awake”. She was glad Alex had agreed to go pick Amber up, that way she drove straight to Baylor. Not being able to talk from her excitement she text messaged Alex with the great news….

“So I have to go and tell the world that I have a daughter. I just wanted to let you know that, because once I do that, the media will put their eye on you. I want you to be ok with it, and I can get you security for protection, because the media can do crazy things to get close to you or to just get a picture of you.”  He looked at Amber in the eyes to assure her that it was safe; he wouldn’t let them harm her.

“What can I say, but that I wish you didn’t have to leave so soon? Don’t worry about me I can handle chaos pretty good. Besides, grand….I mean Denise is going to stay here with me.” She just couldn’t get the courage to say the g word to Denise yet nor could she call Alex Dad it was taking her time to get comfortable with them.

She couldn’t believe her granddaughter was so close to calling her Grandma. She felt her tears threatening to come out, as she remembered the day she arrived in Dallas and was greeted by her son. He looked so happy that day, and to her surprise his happiness had a reason, he had just met his daughter. When he told her the whole story, she was hesitant to believe that Amber was his daughter. But, she had the right to feel like that she had only met Pamela once and she was flaunting a beautiful engagement ring on her left hand. She remembered Alex presenting her as a good friend of his, but when she saw the way he looked at her she knew better than to believe that he just wanted to be her friend. She knew her son well and he felt something more than friendship for her. Then she remembered the look on her face it also showed attraction toward her son. What she didn’t understand was why if she felt the same way he did she kept true to her engagement with the other man. Now looking at Amber she felt the bond that only happens with family, besides she had her son’s eyelashes. She felt the connection to her granddaughter and it made her so happy to know that after all her son did give her granddaughter.

“Mom, you will be staying with her right?” asked Alex as he looked into his mother eyes knowing exactly what she was feeling she almost called her grandma. He then felt a pinch in his heart as he realized she had not yet called him Dad. That’s when he realized his phone had beeped, who could of text messaged him? Kim? No, Kim never text him. He opened the text message as he saw it was from Gracie:  She’s awake Alex; I am on my way to the hospital.

“What’s wrong? Who called you?” asked Denise as she saw her sons face expression that of surprise.

“Pamela is awake! We need to go now.” With that he stood and again repeated that Pamela was awake. He was surprised when Amber threw herself on him with a big hug, she was happy her mother had come out of her coma…

“Let’s go see mom,” she said as she got her purse and walked toward the door.
