Chapter
7
After Kevin
watched the ambulance leave, he went back over to where the last three
paramedics were working on Brian. Kevin was dismayed to see that Brian had lost
consciousness.
"Is he
gonna be okay?" he asked one of the paramedics.
"I don't
know. It depends on what this pole hit and how far it is lodged inside of
him," the paramedic said.
Kevin watched
as they carefully placed Brian onto the stretcher, the pole still sticking out
of his chest.
"Can't
you take that thing out of him?" he asked.
"No,
he'll probably bleed to death of we do that," a paramedic replied. As they
strapped him onto the stretcher, Kevin glanced down at the ground where Brian
had been lying. He saw a puddle of sticky red blood on the grass.
"Oh
no," he thought. "That pole must have gone all the way through
him." Suddenly, Kevin felt extremely nauseated again.
"You
coming?" one paramedic asked Kevin.
"Oh,
yeah, I'm coming," Kevin said, hurrying up to the ambulance. As he got
there, another ambulance pulled up. Two paramedics climbed out. The wheeled a
stretcher over to the bus. A few minutes later, the wheeled someone out inside
a black body bag. "Bobby," thought Kevin sadly. Then he climbed into
the ambulance with Brian, and they headed to the hospital.

Halfway to the
hospital, Brian stopped breathing.
"Check
for a pulse!" one paramedic said to the other. The other grabbed Brian's
wrist and felt for a pulse.
"No
pulse!" he cried.
"I'll
start chest compressions," the first paramedic said. He climbed onto the
stretcher and straddled Brian. Then he began giving Brian CPR. The other
paramedic attached a bag-like object to Brian's mouth and began squeezing it
every few seconds. They stopped and took Brian's pulse. Still nothing. They
continues CPR. Kevin stood back and prayed that they would get to the hospital
soon.
