Chapter
27
Towards the
end, when Jack was about to die, Katelyn's eyes filled with tears, as always.
She had seen the movie many times, but could never watch it without crying. She
glanced over at Brian once, hoping he hadn't noticed her silent tears and saw
that his own eyes glistened with tears. She smiled and put her hand over his.
He turned to her and flashed her a sheepish smile, brushing the tears out of his
eyes. She just smiled back at him and turned back to the movie.
"He
saved me, in every way that a person can be saved," said the old Rose on
the movie. Katelyn was suddenly overcome with even more emotion than she
already was feeling, as she realized the line described what Brian had done for
her too.
"Brian,"
she whispered, scooting closer to him. He turned to her. "You saved
me," she said softly.
His eyes
filled with more tears and he pulled her into a hug. They hugged for a moment,
then pulled back slightly. Katelyn gazed into Brian's beautiful blue eyes, and
he stared into her shining green ones. Suddenly, without even realizing what
she was doing, Katelyn let her mouth drift up to his, and his lowered to hers.
As Jack and Rose were reunited on the ship one last time, Brian and Katelyn's
lips touched, and they kissed.
Katelyn didn't
know how long they held the kiss, but when she finally pulled back, the credits
were rolling and "My Heart Will Go On" was halfway through.
She stared up
at Brian in shock. "Oh my God, Bri, I'm so sorry," she cried. She
couldn't believe she had kissed Brian, only hours after his fiancée had dumped
him. The worst part was, although she knew it was wrong, she had enjoyed every
minute of it. Kissing Brian was every bit as wonderful as she had always
imagined it to be.
Brian was also
shocked. "No, Kate, sweetie, it's okay," he said. He immediately felt
disloyal to Leighanne. What am I thinking? he asked himself. He and
Leighanne had broken up. There was nothing wrong with kissing Katelyn. But
still, he felt bad about kissing the girl he had denied having a relationship
with to Leighanne earlier that day. But deep in his heart, he realized the real
reason he felt bad was because he had enjoyed kissing her. He knew it was not
right. Up until a few hours ago, he had been engaged, and now he had just
kissed another girl. Plus, Katelyn was only seventeen. He was twenty five,
eight years older than her. But he couldn't ignore what he had felt when he
kissed her. Neither could she.
"Brian, I
am so sorry," Katelyn said again. She looked about ready to cry again.
Brian put an
arm around her. "Kate, it's okay. Face it, Leigh and I are finished."
"But…"
Katelyn started to say, but Brian put his finger on her lips to silence her.
"Kate, it
happened. There's nothing we can do to change that," Brian said. He wanted
to tell her how he really felt, but he didn't know if she had felt the same way
or not.
She wanted to
tell him too. She wanted to know if he had felt anything at all when he kissed
her. After a few moments of silence, she finally grew the courage to ask.
"Brian,
did you feel anything special when we kissed?" she asked softly.
He turned to
her again and stared down at her. He felt as if she had read his mind.
"Did you?" he asked.
"I asked
you first," Katelyn said.
"Yeah,"
he admitted. "It was like fireworks or something."
"It was
like an nuclear bomb for me," Katelyn said with a giggle. She was relieved
that he had felt something as well.
He laughed and
pulled her onto his lap playfully. "So what do we do now?" he asked.
"We can't just let this go without doing something about it, but it would
be pretty weird seeing each other right after what happened with Leigh and
I."
Katelyn
agreed. "Yeah, if she saw us together, then she would think you were lying
about us seeing each other. Honestly, Bri, I've always liked you, but I would
never think of making a move on you while you were with Leigh. And just now, it
just kinda happened. I guess I just got caught up in the moment or
something."
"I know
what you mean. I did the same thing," Brian admitted. "Katelyn, I
think we have something going here. If we both are feeling the same way, I
think we should hook up. If that's what you want," he added quickly.
"I'd love
to, Brian," Katelyn said, here eyes sparkling.
"But,
listen, I'd rather no one know about this for awhile. Not until this whole
wedding thing has ended," Brian said. "Then we can tell people."
"I
agree," Katelyn replied.
Brian hugged
her once more. Then, Harold got home, and they all got ready for supper.
