Chapter

When Brian
awoke, he found both his parents standing by his bed. His mother smiled a smile
of relief when she saw his eyes open.
"Oh,
Babyduck," she said softly, bending over and kissing him on the forehead.
"You had us so worried."
"What
happened?" Brian asked weakly.
"You had
some internal bleeding in your stomach that no one caught before. They took you
into surgery and fixed it though. Dr. Martin said you did fine, and that you'll
be a little sore for a few days, but you'll be fine," Jackie explained.
"That's
good," Brian mumbled. He was still groggy from the anesthesia.
"Well,
your mother and I will let you go back to sleep for awhile, son," Harold
said.
"Okay,"
Brian replied.
"Good-bye,
honey," Jackie said.
"Bye,"
Brian said, offering them a tiny smile. He watched as they left the room and
then fell asleep.

When Brian
awoke again, he had been moved out of recovery and into his regular room. No
one was in the room with him though. He was relieved to find that his stomach
no longer hurt. In fact, he was in no pain at all. He realized they must have
given him some more pain medication. He was glad, for that pain medication
really worked well.

Dr. Martin
kept Brian in the hospital for two weeks, making sure he didn't have anymore
internal bleeding and checking to see that his injuries were healing properly.
The day before
he went home, she ran x-rays on his leg to see how well it was healing. Brian
was relieved to find that the bone seemed to be mending well and would not
require surgery.
The next
morning, Dr. Martin released Brian, giving him a prescription for opium, a drug
used to kill pain. Brian's car had been completely totaled in the wreck, so he
rode in his parents' car to Lexington.
