Chapter
20
The next day,
Morgan fell into a coma. Everyone knew it was only a matter of days at most
before she would die, unless a heart would come in time.
She was in a
coma for three days, her condition deteriorating. Dave, Lisa, Brian, Nick, and Leighanne all
took turns staying with her.
On the third
day, Brian was in the room when something happened. Morgan opened her eyes.
"Morgan?"
Brian cried in surprise. Morgan smiled slightly.
"Hi,
Brian," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I'm going to die,
aren’t I?"
"Morgan,
don't say that," Brian said, afraid he would lose it in front of her.
"It's
okay, Brian," she said. "I'm not afraid."
Brian just
stared at her, awed by how calm and brave she was.
"I'll
miss you when I get to Heaven, Brian," Morgan said. Brian's eyes filled
with tears. He couldn't hold them back anymore. Morgan squeezed his hand
weakly.
"Don't
cry, Bri. I'll be fine up in Heaven. And someday, I'll see you again."
Brian nodded.
"Someday," he said. Morgan's eyes closed for a moment, then opened
again.
"Tell my
Mommy and Daddy I said bye," Morgan said.
"Okay,"
Brian said softly. He watched as Morgan's eyes closed again and fluttered back
open.
"I love
you, Brian," she said. Then her eyes closed a final time.
"I love
you too, Morgan," Brian said, tears streaming down his cheeks. Brian could
have sworn he saw her smile. But suddenly, her heart monitor began to wail. He
looked up and saw the peaking line go flat. Her grip on his hand went limp, and
her chest stopped rising.
Brian began to
sob uncontrollably. A moment later, doctors rushed into the room and pushed him
back. They tried to resuscitate Morgan, but couldn't. She was gone.
