Chapter 9

An hour later, he was in Leighanne's father's car, driving towards Marietta, where Morgan lived.

He arrived promptly at four.  He hopped out of the car and walked up to the front porch.  He rang the doorbell and waited only seconds before the front door opened.

"Brian!  Come on in," Lisa said, smiling.  Brian stepped inside.

"Hey, Brian," Dave said, coming into the living room.  "How are you?"

"I'm good.  How have you been?" Brian asked.

"Pretty good," Dave replied.  "Morgan's in her room, taking a nap.  We made the mistake of telling her you were coming.  That made it hard to get her to rest.  She was too excited to go to sleep.  But she finally did.  She should be awake soon though."

"Okay," Brian said.

"Can I get you something to drink?" Lisa asked.

"Sure, what do you have?" Brian asked.

"Is Coke okay?" she asked.

"Sure," Brian said.  Lisa went out to get drinks while Brian and Dave sat down in the living room.

Morgan woke up about fifteen minutes later.  "Brian!" she squealed happily when she saw him.  She crawled onto the couch next to him.

"Hey, Morgan!" Brian said, hugging her.  "What's up?"

"Not much," she said.  "What's up with you?"

Brian told her all about the rest of the tour, the Bahamas, and Kentucky.  She listened with interest to every word he said.

As Brian talked to her, he realized she was getting sicker.  She seemed thinner than when he had last seen her.  Her skin was pale, and there were dark circles under her pretty blue eyes.  When she talked, he noticed that she took a breath after every few words.  He prayed silently that she would get a heart transplant soon.  He could tell she was growing more and more desperate for one.
